POSITION PURPOSE:

The position of Kitchen Assistant is responsible for performing routine work in preparing and serving food and cleanup activities, under direct supervision.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Assist in preparation and serving of food; clean up dining and kitchen areas;
  • Open cans, apportion contents, wash and prepare vegetables for cooking;
  • Assemble salads, sandwiches, desserts and lunches;
  • Wash dishes, utensils, pots and pans;
  • Clean tables and chairs and food service area;
  • Replenish food and condiment containers;
  • Store and dispose of unused food;
  • May relieve or assist other employees in higher level food preparation tasks to meet emergency or on-the-job training situations;
  • May lead work of students and part-time help;
  • May collect money or tickets for meals;
  • May set up and sell ala carte and Type A lunches;
  • May complete daily and monthly records and reports;
  • May transport food from central kitchen to satellite kitchen;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to and is directly supervised by the Kitchen Manager.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):

  • Possess or be eligible for the State of Washington Department of Health Food and Beverage Handlers Permit.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):

  • None

KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

  • Safe food handling;
  • Preparation and storage following Health Department Guidelines;
  • General food preparation methods.

SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to understand and carry out and written instructions;
  • Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relations with staff, students, and public;
  • Demonstrates multicultural sensitivity with the ability to effectively and collaboratively work with diverse populations;
  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with all applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements;
  • Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

May work outdoors in inclement weather. May require physical mobility to move through a school campus, including up and down stairs and inside and outside.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a general posting for one or more Kitchen Assistants positions. Positions may be full or part-time and will be filled as specific openings are identified.

2025-26 Nutrition Services salary level A $21.90/hour to $24.33/hour (starting at $21.90/hour), 5-20 hours per week, for up to a 179 day annual assignment. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life-insurance eligibility is based upon 630 hours worked within a school year. Retirement provided through Washington State Department of Retirement Systems.
