Position Summary
Performs basic animal care, shelter maintenance, and housekeeping tasks; conducts general health observations of impounded animals; assists with handling and processing impounded animals; monitors shelter facility to maintain compliance with State regulations; can assist with or perform other shelter operations tasks as directed.

Position Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
Experience: Six (6) months of prior animal care or related experience or training preferred but not required.
Any combination of related, education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Knowledge In: Usinghand tools, high-pressure washers, animal handling equipment, and cleaning tools safely and effectively; safely cares for and handles all types of animals.
Skilled In: Communicating and interacting effectively with a wide variety of people; writing information accurately and legibly on forms and records; communicating clearly using two-way radios and telephones; working in all weather and environmental conditions; understanding, and following written instructions; safely caring for and handles all types of animals; and maintaining regular and punctual attendance.
Conditions of Employment: Must submit and pass a pre-employment drug, pre-placement medical examination and the job placement assessment (JPA).Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver's License Class "C" and good driving record as defined by City policy.
Other Requirements: Employees may be required to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on short notice, as operational needs dictate. During emergency operations, in preparation for prolonged emergency operations and/ or during recovery from prolonged emergency operations as directed by his/her direct supervisor, Department Head or designee, or the City Manager or designee.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions: This is primarily an indoor environment, standing in work areas and walking between work areas is required. While performing this job, employees routinely stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The position requires lifting or carrying supplies, animals, or equipment.
Employees must regularly lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift, push, or pull up to 50 to 75 pounds with or without assistance. Typical daily lifting requirements for certain tasks range from 25 to 50 pounds.
The position requires exposure to animal dander, animal waste, animal bites or scratches, and various cleaning agents and disinfectants. Employees may also be exposed to seasonal weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold, and may be assigned duties in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments. Work may be performed on uneven or slippery surfaces. Employees must be able to safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the position without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others. This includes the ability to lift and carry large animals, climb ladders and stairs, run or move quickly to capture or restrain animals, and perform physically demanding tasks associated with animal handling and shelter operations.
