Compensation:$140 per day 

Position Summary

The K–12 Substitute Teacher provides instructional continuity and classroom supervision during the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The substitute is responsible for implementing lesson plans, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, promoting scholar engagement, and supporting the academic and behavioral expectations of Carter G. Woodson School.

Substitute teachers may be assigned to elementary, middle, or high school classrooms based on school needs and certification.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement lesson plans and instructional activities provided by the classroom teacher.
  • Deliver instruction while maintaining continuity of learning and academic expectations.
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and engaging classroom environment that promotes scholar success.
  • Maintain effective classroom management using established school procedures and expectations.
  • Encourage scholar participation, critical thinking, and positive behavior.
  • Supervise scholars throughout the instructional day, including classroom transitions, lunch, dismissal, and other assigned duties.
  • Take and report accurate attendance and complete any required classroom documentation.
  • Communicate classroom concerns, behavioral incidents, or emergencies to the appropriate administrator.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all scholars while maintaining a professional learning environment.
  • Collaborate professionally with teachers, administrators, and support staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality of scholar and staff information in accordance with FERPA and school policies.
  • Follow all Carter G. Woodson School policies, procedures, and emergency protocols.

Qualifications

  • Valid North Carolina Teaching License or equivalent teaching certification preferred. 
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred. 
  • Previous classroom teaching experience preferred.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to different grade levels, subject areas, and instructional settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish positive relationships with scholars and staff.
  • Successful completion of all required background checks and pre-employment requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the school day.
  • Ability to supervise scholars in classrooms and other school settings.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies.

Compensation

Substitute Teacher:$140.00 per full instructional day

Substitute teachers are employed on an as-needed basis and are not eligible for employee benefits unless otherwise specified by Carter G. Woodson School policy.
