SUMMARY

The Physical Education Specialist is an on-site role located in Skykomish, WA. This K-12 position is responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing age-appropriate physical education instruction that promotes fitness, motor skills development, teamwork, and lifelong wellness and nutrition habits. Day-to-day responsibilities include designing and implementing lesson plans aligned with district and state standards, leading structured physical activities and sports, teaching safe exercise techniques, and adapting activities to meet diverse student needs and abilities. The Specialist will monitor student progress, maintain accurate records, collaborate with other educators and support staff, and communicate regularly with families about student growth. Additional duties may include supervising extracurricular activities, support school-wide health and wellness initiatives, and contributing to a positive and inclusive school culture.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Qualifications at entry

• Candidates should possess strong skills in Physical Education, including knowledge of fitness principles, motor development, and safe exercise practices for children.
• Training/experience providing lessons that reflect sound principles on how 5-18 year old students learn.
• Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students including gifted, general education, special education, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
• Ability to work with students in multi-aged groups.
• Experience with instruction in special activities, such as movement exploration, dancing, rhythmic competency tasks, creative dramatics, and recess playground activities.
• Ability to integrate physical education activities into music, art and classroom instructional programs.
• Candidates should possess skills in classroom management, student assessment, and instructional differentiation.
• Candidates should possess effective Communication skills, including the ability to explain concepts clearly, motivate students, and collaborate with colleagues, families, and community partners.
• Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with students, families, and colleagues, verbally and in writing.
• Ongoing professional development activities, professional associations, workshops, and in-service.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable Board policies and district and legal requirements; recognize and adhere to professional boundaries with students and Model Code of Ethics for Educators.
• Ability to meet and maintain punctuality and attendance expectations.
• Relevant qualifications may include a bachelor's degree in physical education, kinesiology, education, or a related field, and appropriate state teaching certification or eligibility for certification.
• Additional beneficial qualifications include experience working in K-12 school settings, knowledge of trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices, CPR/First Aid certification, and the ability to safely supervise indoor and outdoor physical activities.

REQUIREMENTS: Education & Experience

• Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State K-8 teaching certificate with an endorsement in Physical Education.
• Maintain a valid CPR/First Aid certification and have the physical ability to perform CPR/First Aid if necessary.

CLEARANCES

Criminal justice fingerprint and background check with Washington State's Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and FBI. Skykomish School District will also conduct a minimum of three reference checks.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing/pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions including keyboarding. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed with time spent indoors and outdoors as guided by lesson plans and conditions permitting; portions of the day will be time spent outdoors and are subject to a variety of changing weather conditions and potentially uneven/slippery surfaces.

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Conditions of employment The position is part-time or full-time contingent on several factors including qualifications and District objectives. Reports directly to and is supervised by the Building Administrator.

Annual salary prorated based on assignment FTE (based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement salary schedule, 2025-2026 Salary Schedule $70,990 to $137,900). Certificated staff work the school year contract with placement on the District and SEA bargaining agreement salary schedule. Placement on the schedule is determined by training and experience.
