Junior Functional/Automation Tester - Washington, DC (Remote)

Seeking for a Junior Functional/Automation Tester to support software quality assurance and testing activities across the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). This role will perform functional, regression, API, and automated testing, document and track defects, and collaborate with development and QA teams to ensure high-quality software delivery.
The ideal candidate will have foundational experience in software testing and test automation, along with exposure to API testing, Java/JavaScript/SQL, Git, and CI/CD concepts.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform functional, regression, integration, and other software testing activities.
- Review requirements and develop clear test scenarios and test cases.
- Execute manual and automated tests and document testing results.
- Create, maintain, and enhance automated test scripts using appropriate testing tools and frameworks.
- Perform basic API testing, including request/response validation, HTTP status codes, error handling, and authentication scenarios.
- Use Java, JavaScript, and/or SQL for test automation, scripting, and data validation.
- Identify, document, track, retest, and close software defects.
- Work with developers and QA team members to investigate and resolve defects.
- Use Git-based workflows, including branching, pull requests, and code reviews.
- Support automated testing within CI/CD pipelines and gain hands-on experience with tools such as Jenkins or GitLab.
- Follow secure testing practices, including protecting sensitive test data, safe logging, and least-privilege principles.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies and testing activities throughout the SDLC.
- Document test results, defects, and supporting evidence clearly and accurately.
- Collaborate with QA, Development, DevOps, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
- Follow established testing standards and continuously improve technical and automation skills.
Required Qualifications
- 1–2 years of experience in software testing, quality assurance, test automation, or a related software development role. Internships, co-ops, and equivalent project experience may be considered.
- Foundational understanding of functional testing, regression testing, and the defect lifecycle.
- Experience creating or maintaining automated tests using common testing tools or frameworks.
- Basic knowledge of REST API testing, including requests, responses, HTTP status codes, and authentication concepts.
- Familiarity with at least one programming, scripting, or query language such as Java, JavaScript, or SQL.
- Familiarity with Git and standard development workflows such as branching, pull requests, and code reviews.
- Basic understanding of CI/CD concepts and willingness to learn pipeline-based automated testing.
- Understanding of secure test-data handling and safe logging practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to clearly document test results and software defects.
- Strong collaboration skills and willingness to learn from feedback.
