Job Title: Junior Collateral Review Underwriter

Location: Remote

Employment Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $45,000–$50,000 annually

Position Overview

Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking a detail-oriented Junior Collateral Review Underwriter to support mortgage underwriting operations through the review and analysis of residential property appraisals and flood insurance documentation.

This role is responsible for evaluating collateral documentation, ensuring compliance with investor and underwriting guidelines, identifying potential risks, and clearing appraisal-related conditions prior to closing. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of conventional mortgage underwriting, investor requirements, and appraisal review processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite residential property appraisals upon receipt from the Appraisal Administration team.

  • Analyze appraisal reports and supplemental valuation documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

  • Review flood insurance documentation and related collateral requirements.

  • Evaluate collateral documentation in accordance with investor guidelines, underwriting standards, and internal procedures.

  • Identify discrepancies, inconsistencies, or potential fraudulent documentation within appraisal reports.

  • Ensure collateral-related risk factors are appropriately documented and addressed.

  • Partner with internal departments, including appraisal administration, collateral valuation, processing, and underwriting teams, to resolve appraisal-related questions and issues.

  • Communicate underwriting decisions, findings, and required conditions both verbally and in writing.

  • Provide guidance regarding collateral documentation requirements and condition resolution.

  • Review and clear appraisal-related underwriting conditions prior to loan closing.

  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and file notes.

  • Ensure timely completion of appraisal reviews to support loan processing and closing timelines.

  • Adhere to company policies, investor requirements, and regulatory guidelines.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum of 3 years of conventional mortgage underwriting experience.

  • Knowledge of agency, investor, and mortgage underwriting guidelines and requirements.

  • Experience reviewing residential property appraisals and collateral documentation.

  • Understanding of mortgage lending processes and loan file documentation.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience reviewing appraisal reports and valuation documentation.

  • Knowledge of flood insurance requirements and compliance standards.

  • Familiarity with mortgage underwriting systems and loan origination platforms.

  • Ability to identify potential collateral risks and documentation concerns.

Work Environment

  • Fully remote work environment.

  • Extended periods of sitting and computer use are required.

  • Position requires reviewing electronic loan files, appraisal reports, and underwriting documentation throughout the workday.
