Job Duties
The Court of Appeals of Virginia is seeking applications for a full-time Judicial Law Clerk to Judge Clifford L. Athey, Jr. for a one-year period from fall 2026 to fall 2027.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Judge Athey"s law clerks, including his Judicial Law Clerk:
- Conduct legal research;
- Prepare memoranda and other written products analyzing and summarizing briefs and case materials, which encompass case documents and exhibits, trial transcripts, and related documents;
- Assist with drafting and editing court orders and opinions;
- Analyze and summarize certain motions filed by litigants; and
- Check citations, quotes, appellate briefs, and pleadings for accuracy.
Minimum Qualifications
The most competitive candidates will possess:
- Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school with outstanding academic or extracurricular achievement, or membership in good standing of the bar of the Supreme Court of Virginia or the highest court of another state.
- Applicants should be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and writing skills as well as competence with online legal research (Lexis/Hein Online), computerized word processing software (MS Word), and e-mail (MS Outlook).
- The successful candidate must demonstrate an exceptional work ethic, be organized, detail-oriented, and be able to digest voluminous materials while meeting critical deadlines.
- The job location is in Front Royal, Virginia, although occasional travel to other locations in Virginia is required. American citizenship or permanent legal residency and completion of a criminal background check and analysis are required before any offer will be extended.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience practicing in Virginia trial or appellate courts, or experience and familiarity with the trial and appellate court procedures, systems, and rules utilized in the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a plus but not required.
- Participation in moot court, appellate advocacy, or law review (or other law school journal) is also preferred.
