Scion Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Python Desktop Application Developer for an established organization that combines technical expertise and innovative software to solve complex real-world challenges. This is a 100% remote, 3+ month contract position with possibility of contract-to-hire. Must be located in the US with a preference for professionals located in Portland, OR, California, or Texas.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

This role will support the continued development of a large, established commercial desktop application built almost entirely in Python. The Python Desktop Application Developer will add features, resolve defects, improve the application's user-facing functionality, and collaborate with senior engineers through structured development assignments and code reviews. The ideal candidate can quickly understand code written by other developers and confidently contribute within an extensive object-oriented codebase.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop well-defined Python features and bug fixes within a large, established object-oriented codebase.
• Support the design, functionality, and continued improvement of the desktop application's user-facing interface.
• Reproduce defects, investigate root causes, troubleshoot application issues, and clearly document technical findings.
• Manage code through Git and GitHub Actions while participating in pull requests, code reviews, and structured development workflows.
• Write and maintain automated tests and verify that changes perform as expected without disrupting existing functionality.
• Assist with application testing, packaging, CI/CD, and release processes across Windows and Linux environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, engineering, technology, data science, geospatial science, or a related technical field required.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional Python software development experience.
• Experience developing desktop applications, including graphical user interface or front-end design.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and modify code written by other developers within a large, established codebase, along with a strong understanding of object-oriented programming.
• Hands-on experience with Git, GitHub Actions, pull requests, code reviews, and collaborative software-development practices.
• Strong troubleshooting, written and verbal communication, technical documentation, organization, and priority-management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and collaborate effectively in a remote environment.
• Experience with Qt, PyQt, or PySide and automated testing with Pytest is highly preferred; familiarity with AWS, CI/CD, Windows/Linux application packaging, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel is also valuable. Candidates must have access to a computer capable of supporting Python development, testing, and application packaging.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
