JOB 26-10 - CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR (UTILITIES DEPT.)

POSITION TITLE: Construction Inspector
DEPARTMENT: Utilities/Engineering
PAY GRADE: 405 (Non-exempt)
SALARY: $45,813.00 (through 7/5/26)
$47,187.00 (effective 7/6/26)
The incumbent of this position performs various activities within the Engineering Department in the areas of Construction Inspection and Field Investigations.
The Construction Inspector inspects sanitary sewer, storm water and water distribution construction projects for compliance with the City of Fairmont standards on City of Fairmont projects and new developments. The incumbent of this position acts as the liaison between the City of Fairmont and the contractor/developer. The Construction Inspector keeps daily reports on projects, assists in field investigations for utility service connections and general mapping tasks, locates underground City of Fairmont utilities as needed. The Construction Inspector performs other activities as directed by the Senior Engineer. Other job-related duties as assigned.
The Construction Inspector reports to and receives directions from the Senior Engineering Tech, Utility Manager, or their designee.

The position requires knowledge of practices and methods used in the construction of sanitary sewer facilities, such as; manholes, gravity sewer lines, force mains, pumps stations, etc. The position requires knowledge of practices and methods used in the construction of water distribution facilities, such as: fire hydrants, water mains, shut off valves, pump stations, water storage tanks, etc. The Construction Inspector must possess the ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications, possess knowledge of gravity storm water lines, drop inlets and storm water detention and retention facilities. The incumbent of this position must possess the ability to communicate with people, to complete daily work reports in manner that accurately describes project progress, and to work with minimum amount of supervision. The incumbent of this position must possess the ability to read maps and accurately make corrections, and to use standard underground pipe locating equipment.
Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have five (5) years' experience in a construction related field. Must possess a valid driver's license.

Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors. The noise levels are typical of those environments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: speak clearly, be able to speak publicly, hear, reach with hands and arms, have good finger and hand dexterity, walk, sit, stand, bend, climb stairs, walk on uneven surfaces, crouch, crawl, kneel and stoop. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Incumbents of this position will be exposed to noise, dust and inclement weather conditions.
