## Primary Purpose Provide deaf education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability and communication levels. Work in self-contained, team, inclusion, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.

## Qualifications

### Education

  • Bachelors degree from accredited university.
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required deaf education endorsements for assignments.

### Special Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency in sign language (ASL, PSE, SEE, etc.) as determined by program needs.
  • Knowledge of specific needs and instructional methods for students who are DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing).
  • Understanding of the Admission Review and Dismissal (ARD) process and IEP goal development.
  • General knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and differentiation strategies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply audiological data (e.g., audiograms).
  • Knowledge of Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) and personal hearing devices (cochlear implants, hearing aids, etc.).
  • Ability to administer and interpret communication and language assessments.
  • Effective communication, consultation, and collaboration skills.

### Experience

  • At least one year student teaching or approved internship.

## Major Responsibilities and Duties

### Instructional Strategies

  • Collaborate with students, parents, and staff through the ARD process to develop and implement appropriate IEPs for assigned students.
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver instructional, therapeutic, or skill-development programs aligned with each students communication and learning needs.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques, activities, materials, and technology to support diverse learning styles and ensure accessibility.
  • Work cooperatively with general education teachers to modify curriculum and provide support in inclusive settings.
  • Participate actively in ARD meetings, providing updates on student progress, accommodations, and instructional recommendations.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of instruction data and progress toward IEP goals.

### Student Growth and Development

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal measures.
  • Support students in developing communication, academic, and social skills that promote independence and self-advocacy.
  • Encourage participation in extracurricular and school activities, facilitating communication access when needed.
  • Serve as a positive role model and support the mission and goals of the school district.

### Classroom Management and Organization

  • Create and maintain an environment conducive to communication and learning appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with IEPs, including implementing positive behavior supports and crisis intervention strategies as necessary.
  • Collaborate with teachers and staff regarding classroom behavior plans and student management.
  • Consult district and community resources regarding students educational, social, or medical needs as appropriate.
  • Take reasonable precautions to protect students, materials, and facilities, and assist in the selection of instructional resources as needed.

### Collaboration and Communication

  • Establish and maintain open professional communication with parents, students, administrators, teachers, interpreters, and paraprofessionals.
  • Provide consultation and training to general education teachers and staff regarding DHH accommodations, communication strategies, and use of Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT).
  • Collaborate with audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and related service providers to support student needs and ensure coordinated services.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in spoken, written, and signed formats appropriate to each situation.

### Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) Services This position may or may not include duties of Early Childhood Intervention (ECI), which involve providing professional home visits and consultation to families of hearing-impaired children between the ages of 0-3 based on each familys and childs respective needs.

  • Collaborate with ECI providers to plan appropriate services and assessments.
  • Participate in the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) process and assist with identified evaluations for the child and family.
  • Model and coach families in strategies to support auditory, speech, language, and early learning development.
  • Support families in understanding hearing technology, developmental milestones, and available community resources.

### Itinerant/Travel Services This position may or may not include duties of an itinerant teacher providing direct and/or consultative services to students across multiple campuses, districts, or throughout Region 9.

  • Deliver instruction and consultation in various educational settings to ensure appropriate accommodations, modifications, and accessibility.
  • Collaborate with campus teams and service providers to support student success and maintain consistent communication with each assigned site.

### Assessment and Documentation

  • Administer norm-referenced, criterion-referenced, or curriculum-based assessments in accordance with district and special education department procedures.
  • Analyze and interpret assessment data to determine instructional levels, develop IEP or IFSP goals, and guide educational programming.
  • Prepare comprehensive written reports summarizing results, interpretation, and recommendations.
  • Maintain compliance with all reporting, documentation, and confidentiality requirements within established timelines.

### Other

  • Participate in staff development (RDSPD), district, regional, and state trainings to enhance professional knowledge and skills.
  • Stay informed and comply with all federal, state, district, and campus regulations and policies relevant to deaf education.
  • Attend faculty meetings, serve on committees, and contribute to departmental collaboration.
  • Compile and maintain all required records, reports, and documentation accurately and on schedule.
  • Maintain professional ethics and confidentiality regarding student information.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or principal.

## Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise assigned teacher aides and/or sign language interpreters.
