A hands-on IT Field Service Engineer in a national, multi-site environment.
You will be a road warrior traveling upwards of 75% of the time.
Must have valid drivers license // Clean driving record
My client will cover all expenses and provide a credit card.
Ideally, you live within 50 miles of a major airport
The contractor must be able to travel, work independently, execute rollout and cutover activities, document work accurately, and represent Corporate IT professionally at operating locations.
Engagement | Contract resource; submit candidates who are comfortable with project-based work. |
Work Model | Remote/home-based when not traveling; the work itself is predominantly onsite at company locations on the West Coast and nationwide |
Travel | High travel requirement, generally 50% to 75% and potentially higher during acquisitions, deployments, and cutovers. Overnight travel is routine. |
Schedule Flexibility | Must support occasional evenings and weekends for cutovers, shop openings, and time-sensitive project work. |
Best Home Base | Within practical reach of a major or well-connected commercial airport. Geographic flexibility is more important than a specific office location. |
Physical Work | Must be comfortable handling and moving endpoint and network equipment, working in active shop environments, and performing hands-on installation tasks. |
Role Summary
The Field Service Engineer provides onsite and remote IT support while helping deliver acquisitions, greenfield and brownfield openings, remodels, expansions, relocations, hardware refreshes, and infrastructure integration projects.
The contractor serves as the hands-on IT representative in the field and works with Operations, Construction, Facilities, vendors, service desk, networking, security, IT asset management, and project stakeholders to make each location operational, supportable, secure, and ready for day-one business.
What you will be doing?
Field IT Support | Troubleshoot Windows endpoints, Microsoft 365, browsers, printers, scanners, mobile devices, touchscreens, kiosks, connectivity, user access, and peripheral issues onsite and remotely. |
Deployment & Cutover | Stage, install, configure, test, and validate workstations, laptops, servers, printers, scanners, phones, displays, network devices, and other shop technology before go-live. |
Infrastructure Support | Support firewalls, switches, wireless access points, ISP circuits, VLAN/connectivity troubleshooting, racks, UPS units, patching, and structured cabling coordination. Escalate appropriately rather than overreaching. |
Site Surveys | Perform detailed site readiness assessments, 360-degree or Matterport-style surveys, equipment inventories, closet/rack reviews, floor-plan documentation, and risk identification. |
Project coordination | Track tasks, dependencies, milestones, blockers, equipment, travel, and closeout activity in Smartsheet or comparable project tools. |
Documentation | Maintain accurate checklists, ITSM notes, asset records, configurations, photos, sign-off evidence, implementation notes, and status updates. Never mark work complete without validation. |
Business Communication | Coordinate professionally with shop managers, operations leaders, vendors, and IT teams. Explain technical needs in clear, practical language and communicate delays or risks early. |
Ideal Candidate Profile
Hands-on technician who can move between endpoint support, network/infrastructure tasks, project coordination, and onsite business support.
Comfortable traveling frequently and changing plans as acquisition or construction timelines move.
A self-starter who can work without constant supervision, but knows when to escalate to networking, security, service desk, vendors, or project leadership.
Disciplined about checklists, evidence, asset tracking, time entry, status updates, and completion documentation.
Customer-focused and calm in active operating environments where business disruption must be minimized.
Able to lead a site activity or guide other technicians when needed, even if the role has no direct reports.
Practical and adaptable. Strong execution and follow-through matter more than advanced architecture or design credentials.
Required Qualifications
3+ years of relevant IT field services, infrastructure support, deployment, systems support, or multi-site technical support experience.
Hands-on experience supporting Windows 10/11 endpoints, Microsoft 365, printers, scanners, browsers, mobile devices, and common business peripherals.
Working knowledge of switches, wireless access points, firewalls, TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, VLAN concepts, cabling, and ISP troubleshooting.
Experience installing, configuring, testing, and documenting technology in the field.
Ability to read and follow technical scopes, checklists, floor plans, wiring plans, and standard operating procedures.
Strong written and verbal communication with the ability to work directly with non-technical users and operational leaders.
Valid driver license, acceptable driving capability for business travel, and ability to lift or move technology equipment up to 50 pounds.
Ability to pass all onboarding, security, privacy, and system-access requirements required by the client and staffing/vendor relationship.
Preferred Experience
Smartsheet or comparable project tracking experience, including schedules, milestones, dependencies, risks, status updates, and reporting.
Matterport, 360-degree imaging, Ekahau, wireless survey, facility survey, or construction/remodel site assessment experience.
Meraki, Fortinet, Cisco, or comparable firewall, switching, and wireless experience.
Acquisition integration, new location opening, office relocation, infrastructure refresh, hardware rollout, or multi-site standardization experience.
Experience coordinating structured cabling, low-voltage vendors, ISP installations, equipment shipping, and onsite cutovers.
ITSM and remote management tool experience. ServiceNow, Ivanti, NinjaOne, or similar experience is useful.
CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, Cisco CCNA, Microsoft, Ekahau, or equivalent certifications are a plus, not a substitute for field execution.
