The Irrigation Technician performs journey-level work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of irrigation sprinkler systems on City property to ensure effective watering of golf courses, park areas, and playing fields.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manages, designs, permits, and supervises installations; inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains drinking fountains and irrigation systems within Park and Recreation properties; provides a high level of maintenance for turf and landscaping areas within the City.
  • Loads and unloads tools, irrigation materials, and equipment onto trucks to ensure necessary tools are available for repairs to be made.
  • Performs general technical and preventive maintenance on sprinkler systems such as checking oils, cleaning parts, and making adjustments to ensure system is maintained in proper operating condition.
  • Makes diagnoses of problems when possible or refers to journey level irrigation worker to provide effective repair of sprinkler systems.
  • Performs a variety of activities such as digging trenches, driving tractor to pull water tank, using chain saws and weed eaters to assist with irrigation system maintenance.
  • Provides quality customer service and competent public interaction.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three (3) years of installing irrigation or working with landscaping.
  • Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Valid Texas Irrigator's License Issued by the Texas Commission Environmental Quality (TCEQ) preferred.

Supplemental Information

  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of installing and maintaining irrigation systems;
  • Knowledge and understanding of safety procedures;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Skill in the operation and use of standard office software which includes databases and presentation programs, along with standard Microsoft products; and
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials.
  • Highly organized and have the ability to prioritize projects and handle several projects at the same time.
  • Exhibit good problem-solving skills and good judgment in keeping with the mission of the Recreation Department.

Vacation

Non-civil service employees accrue 6.67 hours per month (2 weeks per year).

All police employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

All Fire employees accrue 15 hours per month (7.5 - 24 hour shifts a year).

Sick Leave

Non-civil service employees accrue 10 hours per month (3 weeks per year).

Holidays

Non-civil service employees receive 13 paid holidays per year including one personal or "floating" day.

Longevity Pay

Earned at a rate of $4 per month.

This is calculated on number of years of service up to and including 25 years (maximum $1200).

Fire/Police

Eligible for Education/Certification pay.
