Job Summary
Under general direction, this position performs skilled and technical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of irrigation systems for City parks, facilities, and landscaped areas. The position operates with a high degree of independence to ensure proper system performance, efficient water usage, and the health and sustainability of turf, trees, and landscaped environments.
Typical Duties
Irrigation System Installation & Repair
? Installs irrigation systems including piping, valves, sprinkler heads, controllers, and related components
? Performs repairs to irrigation systems, including replacement of damaged or malfunctioning parts
? Conducts audits, system modifications and upgrades to improve performance and efficiency
? Assists with layout and installation of new irrigation zones and system expansions
System Maintenance & Troubleshooting
? Inspects irrigation systems to identify leaks, pressure issues, malfunctioning components, and coverage deficiencies
? Diagnoses system failures and determines appropriate corrective actions
? Performs preventive maintenance to ensure proper system operation and longevity
? Adjusts sprinkler heads, valves, and controllers to maintain proper coverage and performance
Water Management & System Efficiency
? Monitors irrigation schedules and system performance to ensure efficient water usage
? Adjusts watering schedules based on seasonal conditions, weather patterns, and landscape needs
? Identifies opportunities to improve system efficiency and reduce water waste
? Ensures proper operation of pumps, controllers, and distribution systems
Equipment Operation & Technical Work
? Operates hand tools, power tools, and specialized irrigation equipment
? Utilizes knowledge of plumbing systems, valves, pressure systems, and electrical controls
? Performs basic troubleshooting of electrical and mechanical components associated with irrigation systems
Recordkeeping & Reporting
? Maintains records of system inspections, repairs and maintenance activities.
? Documents work performed, materials used, and system performance issues
? Assists with tracking irrigation system performance and maintenance needs
Coordination & Operational Support
? Coordinates irrigation work with parks maintenance staff and ongoing projects
? Supports maintenance and landscaping operations by ensuring irrigation systems meet operational needs
? Assists with planning irrigation improvements and system upgrades
Safety & Compliance
? Follows established safety procedures when working with equipment, tools, and irrigation systems
? Ensures compliance with operational standards and applicable regulations
? Maintains awareness of hazards associated with excavation, equipment use, and water systems
Other Duties
? Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
? High School diploma or equivalent
? Experience with installation, maintenance, repair of irrigation systems, or related field
? Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Licenses & Certifications
? Valid driver's license equivalent to a New Mexico Class D
? MS-6 Journeyman Sprinkler License within twelve (12) months of hire
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of:
? Irrigation system components including piping, valves, sprinkler heads, controllers, and pumps
? Irrigation system installation, maintenance, and repair techniques
? Water distribution systems, pressure systems, and flow management
? Basic plumbing principles related to irrigation systems
? Electrical controls and timers used in irrigation systems
? Grounds maintenance and landscape watering requirements
? Safety practices related to excavation, equipment operation, and water systems

Physical Requirements
Work involves standing, walking, bending, digging, lifting, and operating tools and equipment. Requires the ability to perform physically demanding work in outdoor environments.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily outdoors with exposure to weather conditions, water systems, excavation hazards, and equipment. Position involves travel between sites and work around landscaping operations and maintenance activities. Position is safety sensitive and subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Clovis policies.
