General Description of the Position

The International Academic Advisor will provide concierge-level support to international students from initial enrollment through graduation. The advisor proactively monitors student attendance and engagement, conducts outreach to at-risk students, and delivers early interventions to promote successful academic progress throughout their Delaware State University program. This role requires maintaining comprehensive expertise in academic advising practices and a thorough understanding of all university programs. A successful candidate will use strong critical-thinking skills to help a diverse population of international students overcome myriad obstacles to achieve their educational objectives. Successful candidates enjoy working in a high-energy, fast-paced environment, demonstrate enthusiasm and initiative, and possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with students and all university stakeholders. The advisor will participate in student retention initiatives, including attending virtual and/or onsite events, information sessions, webinars, and other events as requested, to offer guidance to reentry students. The advisor serves as the primary point of contact for students navigating academic policies, course selection, and online learning expectations.

Essential Functions

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  • Manage and provide academic advising to international students from entry term to program completion.
  • Responsible for advisement and registration of an assigned population of students on their program.
  • Guide students through the registration process by engaging in consultative dialogue based on student needs, motivations, career and educational goals, presentinginformation in a professional, articulate, and confident manner, resulting in enrollment and matriculation at Delaware State University
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of Delaware State Universitys academic programs, services, policies, procedures, and systems to guide students effectively and accurately.
  • Be highly visible and dynamic through a high volume of interactions with international students by phone, video conferencing, text, and email on a regular and consistent basis.
  • Accurately document, maintain, and track all student interactions, information, and progression through the Customer Relations Management system (CRM).
  • Monitor student progress and proactively reach out to those at risk of academic difficulty or disengagement.
  • Act as a liaison for students by assisting with all administrative processes, including admissions, registration, and degree planning.
  • Provide students with available tools and resources by anticipating needs through consultative conversations.
  • Provide comprehensive responses to student questions regarding credit for prior learning (CPL), transfer credit, transcripts, document tracking, and other records being sent to the University.
  • Contribute to individual, team, and unit goals on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to ensure student growth targets are met.
  • Maintain productivity and high-quality customer service throughout all student interactions.
  • Collaborate with admissions, faculty, and student support teams to ensure a cohesive experience.
  • Deliver orientation sessions, academic workshops, and webinars tailored to international students.
  • Stay informed on global education systems and the specific needs of international learners.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with students from diverse cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds.
  • Strong understanding of university programs, curriculum, academic regulations, course planning, and graduation pathways.
  • Ability to guide, coach, and motivate students, identify at-risk behaviors, and provide appropriate and timely interventions.
  • Competence with LMS platforms, student information systems, CRM tools, and virtual advising technologies.
  • Ability to assess student challenges, analyze options, and recommend effective solutions.
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish a rapport with students, faculty, and staff and collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and professionally through email, video, and live discussions tailored to a global audience.
  • Responsible for advisement and registration for students on their academic program.
  • To understand the international student transcript evaluation process.

Qualification Standards

  • A master's degree is required, preferably in the discipline areas of Education, Counseling, Management and/or Human Service Related.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in academic and career advisement settings with college students.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population, including students, staff, faculty, administrators, and all university stakeholders.
