Intellectual Property Paralegal Job Description

LHH Recruitment Solutions is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Paralegal on behalf of a respected law firm in Chicago, Illinois. This opportunity is ideal for a detail-oriented legal professional with significant experience supporting trademark, patent, and intellectual property portfolio management matters.

The successful candidate will have strong knowledge of USPTO procedures, intellectual property prosecution, docket management, and client communication. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to work on sophisticated intellectual property matters while collaborating with attorneys, clients, and international service providers.

Key Responsibilities

Trademark Support

  • Prepare and file U.S. trademark applications, renewals, declarations of use, and related USPTO filings

  • Monitor trademark prosecution and renewal deadlines

  • Conduct preliminary trademark searches and assist with search report analysis

  • Prepare trademark status reports and portfolio summaries

  • Coordinate foreign trademark filings with international associates

Patent Support

  • Assist attorneys with U.S. and foreign patent prosecution matters

  • Prepare and file patent application documents and related correspondence

  • Track patent deadlines and filing requirements

  • Coordinate patent filings with clients and foreign associates

  • Maintain patent prosecution records and supporting documentation

IP Docketing & Portfolio Management

  • Manage relationships with outside IP docketing vendors

  • Oversee docketing systems and maintain intellectual property databases

  • Monitor critical deadlines and communicate upcoming action items

  • Coordinate renewals, annuities, and maintenance fee payments

  • Review and audit IP portfolio records for accuracy

Client Support

  • Communicate directly with clients regarding filing requirements and deadlines

  • Generate intellectual property portfolio reports

  • Coordinate filing fees, invoices, and foreign associate billing

  • Assist attorneys with special projects and due diligence reviews

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of Intellectual Property Paralegal experience

  • Extensive experience with trademark prosecution and portfolio management

  • Strong knowledge of USPTO rules, procedures, and electronic filing systems

  • Experience working with IP docketing software

  • Excellent organizational and deadline management skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

  • Bachelor's degree and/or Paralegal Certificate

Preferred

  • Experience supporting both trademark and patent prosecution

  • Familiarity with foreign trademark and patent filings

  • Experience assisting with IP due diligence in corporate transactions

  • Knowledge of intellectual property management systems
