Job Details
Seeking an experienced Insurance Defense Attorney to join its Buffalo team. The ideal candidate will have 5–15 years of insurance defense experience and a strong foundation in civil litigation.
The practice handles a significant volume of medical malpractice and general liability defense, but candidates with broader insurance defense backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The right attorney will be comfortable evaluating claims, analyzing exposure, managing discovery, taking depositions, negotiating resolutions, and preparing matters for trial.
This is an opportunity to join a sophisticated defense practice where attorneys are encouraged to take ownership of their matters and develop strategies tailored to each client's needs.
Responsibilities
Handle insurance defense matters from initial assignment through resolution
Defend medical malpractice and general liability claims
Analyze claims, liability, damages, coverage issues, and potential exposure
Conduct legal research and develop case strategy
Draft pleadings, motions, discovery responses, briefs, and other litigation documents
Take and defend depositions
Work with experts and other professionals as necessary
Participate in hearings, mediations, conferences, and trial preparation
Communicate directly with insurance carriers, insureds, opposing counsel, and other stakeholders
Pursue early resolution when appropriate while developing a strong trial strategy for cases that proceed to litigation
Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school
Admission to the New York Bar
5–15 years of insurance defense experience
Medical malpractice and/or general liability experience strongly preferred
Strong research, writing, negotiation, and litigation skills
Ability to independently manage a caseload
Strong client and carrier communication skills
