Job Description

Assists qualified personnel in performing technical maintenance and repair of both Electrical and Instrumentation and control equipment in support of maintenance programs. The work involves maintaining and repairing a variety of electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical equipment, appliances, and devices using specialized test equipment and instruments.

There are three levels for this position, the following is the hiring ranges based on experience:

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician I: $23.60/hour to $32.45/hour

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician II: $27.03/hour to $37.17/hour

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician III: $28.93/hour to $39.78/hour

The full salary range for each level to provide opportunity for growth and development:

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician I: $23.60/hour to $41.30/hour

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician II: $27.03/hour to $47.31/hour

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician III: $28.93/hour to $50.63/hour

Examples of Duties

• Assists in basic preventive maintenance and repairs on instrumentation and electrical equipment including, but not limited to, float level switches, submersible pressure transmitters, lighting fixtures, switches and outlets, pressure transmitters, magnetic flow meters, etc.;
• Ensures that the work area and storage cabinets are well-maintained, organized, and clean;
• Locates instruments and electrical devices in the facilities process and identifies and uses the correct tools such as digital multi-meter, ammeter, hand tools, etc., necessary to perform assigned function;
• Completes instrumentation and electrical equipment performance checks, and records findings;
• Performs measuring, cutting, and installation of electrical conduit under the direction of an Instrumentation and Electrical Technician II or higher;
• Under direct supervision, installs electrical raceways using required tools such as cutters, threaders, benders, clamps, hangers, etc.;
• Communicates and works closely with other Instrumentation and Electrical Technicians on daily work assignments, projects, and tasks;
• Utilizes appropriate PPE such as safety glasses, ear protection, hard hat, etc. before beginning an assigned project;
• Operates a county vehicle;
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Possesses a working familiarity with the methods and procedures of the instrumentation and electrical trades;
• Demonstrates a basic understanding of tools, equipment, and materials used in the Instrumentation and Electrical trades, as well as basic mathematics, computer usage, and English;
• Ability to assist in preventative maintenance and repairs to a variety of instrumentation and control equipment and electrical equipment;
• Ability to work on-call as needed;
• Possesses the ability to develop a working knowledge of the Organization's Information Technology systems, including GIS, SCADA, CMMS, as well Microsoft Office;
• Able to effectively communicate with all Instrumentation and Electrical Technicians and customers;
• Able to operate a county vehicle observing legal and defensive driving practices;
• Possesses the ability to follow established policies and procedures in the performance of duties;
• Possesses the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, communicate effectively, and work cooperatively with others.

Education and Experience

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician I:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school and 1 year of experience in Instrumentation or Electrical work.

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician II:

• A combination of education and experience equivalent to High School diploma or GED and three (3) to five (5) years of experience, and training in instrumentation or electrical work sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities required.

• Possession of either a valid CCST Level I Certification OR a valid Virginia Journeyman Electrical License is required.

• Water or wastewater work experience is preferred.

Instrumentation and Electrical Technician III:

• A combination of education and experience equivalent to High School or GED and five (5) to seven (7) years of experience, and training in Electrical and Instrumentation work sufficient to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and abilities required.

• Possess BOTH a valid CCST Level I Certification and a valid Virginia Journeyman Electrical License.

• Water or wastewater work experience is preferred.

Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid drivers license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
