Instrumentation & Controls Technician II Water/Wastewater
Location: San Antonio, TX
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician II to support instrumentation, automation, and control systems for water and wastewater treatment facilities and related industrial processes. This position will perform troubleshooting, calibration, installation, testing, maintenance, and commissioning of electronic instrumentation and automation systems.
The I&C Technician will work with PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, industrial networks, field instrumentation, drives, and related control equipment. The position will also support system integration and startup activities, including PLC/HMI troubleshooting, I/O verification, loop testing, instrumentation setup, and functional testing.
Key Responsibilities
Perform troubleshooting, calibration, installation, testing, repair, and commissioning of instrumentation and automation systems.
Troubleshoot field instrumentation, control circuits, PLC I/O, communications, and related control-system components.
Install, configure, calibrate, and maintain instrumentation including flow, level, pressure, temperature, analytical instruments, control valves, actuators, and related devices.
Perform instrument calibration, 4 20 mA signal testing, loop checks, I/O verification, and functional testing using appropriate diagnostic and calibration equipment.
Troubleshoot PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems, including communications, program navigation, I/O operation, and controlled program modifications as required.
Assist engineers and controls personnel with PLC system testing, startup, commissioning, and system integration.
Troubleshoot AC/DC drives, VFDs, motors, control panels, power supplies, relays, and other electrical/electronic components.
Diagnose industrial communication and network issues, including Ethernet-based communications and connections.
Support PID loops, process-control systems, and automated equipment associated with pumps, motors, valves, and treatment processes.
Set up new instrumentation according to specifications, P&IDs, schematics, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer documentation.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on instrumentation, controls, test equipment, and peripheral equipment.
Use computerized diagnostic equipment and software to perform testing, troubleshooting, configuration, and reporting.
Support installation and maintenance projects involving automation of water/wastewater and other industrial processes.
Develop and maintain calibration records, testing documentation, commissioning records, equipment documentation, and user information.
Coordinate with engineers, operators, electricians, and other project personnel to identify and resolve instrumentation and controls issues.
Travel to customer and project sites throughout the San Antonio area and other locations as required.
Qualifications
Required
4+ years of experience as an Instrumentation Technician, I&C Technician, Controls Technician, E&I Technician, Automation Technician, or similar industrial controls role.
Strong hands-on experience troubleshooting, calibrating, installing, and commissioning industrial instrumentation.
Proficiency with PLC and HMI systems, including communications, I/O troubleshooting, program navigation, and controlled manipulation.
Working knowledge of SCADA systems and industrial automation.
Strong understanding of 4 20 mA instrumentation, analog and digital I/O, PID loops, and process-control fundamentals.
Experience troubleshooting electrical and electronic components, motors, drives, instrumentation, and control systems.
Technical knowledge of AC/DC drives and VFDs.
Understanding of Ethernet communications and industrial network connections.
Ability to use multimeters, loop/process calibrators, HART communicators, and other diagnostic equipment.
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, loop diagrams, control drawings, and equipment manuals.
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently in operating industrial and treatment-facility environments.
Preferred
Previous experience with water or wastewater treatment plants, pump stations, lift stations, municipal utilities, or similar process facilities.
Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLC and HMI platforms, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and FactoryTalk.
Experience with SCADA and remote I/O/RTU systems.
Experience with Red Lion controls, HMIs, protocol converters, or Crimson software is a plus but not required.
Experience with flow meters, level transmitters, pressure transmitters, analytical instrumentation, control valves, actuators, pumps, and motor-control systems.
Familiarity with Modbus, Ethernet/IP, HART, or similar industrial communication protocols.
Experience supporting system integration, startup, and commissioning activities.
Associate degree, technical degree, or formal training in Instrumentation, Industrial Automation, Electrical Technology, Electronics, or a related discipline preferred.
