POSITION: Instructor of Communications | TV Broadcasting

DIVISION|DEPARTMENT: Arts and Humanities | School of Arts & Sciences

FLSA STATUS: Full-time | Exempt

REPORTS TO: Chair, Arts and Humanities Division

The Instructor of Communications | TV Broadcasting position is a full-time non-tenured faculty position requiring a strong educational background. The Instructor of Communications | TV Broadcasting shall teach undergraduate-level courses in broadcast journalism, television production, and digital media, with a focus on hands-on instruction in our studio and field environments. This role requires commitment to mentoring students, staying current with industry trends, and producing content for campus media outlets. This position will report directly to the Chair of the Division of Arts and Humanities.

Essential Functions

  • Teach 4 courses per semester (e.g., Introduction to Mass Media, TV Production, Broadcast Writing). Develop and implement project-based lessons and curricula that align with industry standards.
  • Mentor students in hands-on studio and field production. Oversee student-led productions, including news broadcasts and live event coverage.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and train students on studio equipment, including cameras, audio systems, lighting, and editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro).
  • Advise students on career pathways and internship opportunities. Serve on university and department committees.
  • Produce or facilitate the production of content across multiple platforms (streaming, social media, linear TV).
  • Teach a variety of undergraduate public relations courses. Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.
  • Contribute to shared governance by serving on committees and participating in other campus activities.
  • Participate in activities of the Arts and Humanities Division, School of Arts and Sciences, the University, and the community as needed.
  • Offer both introductory and advanced courses directly related to scheduled instruction, including lecture, laboratory, clinical, performance, and coaching assignments; preparation for instruction; and student assessment activities.
  • Develop and utilize a course syllabus for each course, following established institutional guidelines.
  • Be accountable for collaborative and applied research in various disciplines, including assistance with grant applications and data analysis on funded grants.
  • Perform teaching, scholarship, service, professional development, and program assessment for accreditation.
  • Advise students in both academic and career fields. Other qualifications include cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or staff populations.
  • A thorough understanding of technology, learning management systems, and computer applications is essential (i.e., Blackboard, Canvas, Power Campus, Jenzabar, LinkedIn Learning).
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or deemed appropriate to the accomplishments of the responsibilities and functions of the Arts and Humanities division.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the department head from assigning tasks that logically relate to the position.

Minimum Requirements

  • A master's degree in television broadcasting, Communications, Media Production, or a closely related field and 18 graduate credit hours
  • The ability to provide quality instruction in television broadcasting.
  • The potential for peer-reviewed research, scholarly, and/or creative accomplishment by representing the University in television broadcasting.
  • The potential to have a positive impact through service, which represents the University on campus and within the greater community.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the news media or television production industry.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level, or potential for high-quality instruction.
  • Documented awareness of, understanding of, and commitment to the history, culture, and traditions of a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
  • Experience with live news production and digital journalism platforms.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing professional work.
  • Experience mentoring diverse student populations.
  • A successful record in teaching TV Broadcasting, scholarly research, professional, and service activities at the college/university level.
  • Experience in grant writing and fundraising is preferred.
  • Experience teaching in higher education.
  • Familiarity with Jenzabar technology suite for higher education.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that may include working nights and weekends.
