Job Summary

The Instructional Coach of Early Literacy Implementation directly supports preschool for the Anchorage School District. The coach builds teacher capacity in instructional practices related to early literacy development, a Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS), culturally responsive practices, and data-based decision-making, in order to increase student performance and comply with the Alaska Reads Act.

The instructional coach promotes collaboration, provides guidance and structure, and focuses on strengths, reflection, and common concerns. This role provides job-embedded professional learning and supports high-quality instruction in preschool classrooms through modeling, observing, co-teaching, and feedback. The coach plays a pivotal leadership role in collaborating with staff to analyze and use student growth and readiness data to impact instructional decision-making. The coach's role is nonsupervisory and does not evaluate colleagues. Ongoing professional development will be provided to build the coaching capacity of selected applicants.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of workdays is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements

The following are required:

  • A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  • Current Alaska Reads Act certification.
  • Five or more years of successful elementary school teaching.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

The following are preferred:

  • Previous instructional coaching or mentoring experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills, including giving and receiving constructive feedback.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships with teachers and administrators.
  • Experience in adult learning theory and coaching.
  • Experience using ASD, student, and site-level data to select, implement, and differentiate instruction designed to meet individual student needs.
  • Knowledge and experience of research, best practices in early childhood instructional design, differentiating instruction, and current educational trends.

Essential Job Functions

Departmentwide Professional Development and Leadership

  • Attends district-level training.
  • Regularly meets with the preschool leadership team to support, plan, and conduct professional development involving early literacy initiatives, departmentwide data, and ongoing improvement needs.
  • Assists with implementation and coordination of a Pyramid (PBIS) within the preschool department.
  • Coordinates implementation of literacy curriculum and academic plans that are consistent with district initiatives, the Alaska Reads Act, and early childhood best practices.
  • Fosters relationships with school and district stakeholders to drive collaboration as well as student growth and achievement.

Instructional Management and Coaching

  • Facilitates job-embedded individual and/or group learning opportunities for certificated or classified instructional staff in areas including early literacy framework implementation and meeting the needs of early learners.
  • Manages early literacy instructional resources and provides training on the use of those resources.
  • Maintains records of coaching activities.
  • Conducts informal classroom observations, PTOTs, or CLASS and/or walkthroughs, and provides constructive feedback that facilitates growth.

Data Analysis Support

  • Fulfills the leadership team role of data coordinator, in addition to other instructional coaching and leadership responsibilities.
  • Prepares reports for leadership team meetings, ensuring that data-based decision-making functions as a standing agenda item.
  • Utilizes the problem-solving model to influence instructional decisions at the department, site, class, and student levels.
  • Assists preschool staff in developing a deep understanding of comprehensive early childhood assessment systems and promotes the use of this data to adjust instruction at all levels.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff and leadership to analyze data, diagnose instructional needs, and identify research-based instructional strategies to increase student growth and early literacy achievement while addressing performance gaps.
  • Coordinates the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation efforts of appropriate early literacy interventions and student support services within the Pyramid framework.

Physical /Mental Demands

The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
