Position Announcement

Working closely with faculty and students, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the learning experience at Utah Valley University. Individuals in this position help support student success by evaluating written assignments, monitoring academic progress, maintaining course records within the Learning Management System, and providing individualized or small-group tutoring when needed. Through regular interaction with students and instructors, this role helps foster engagement, academic growth, and effective course completion.

This position is ideal for candidates who enjoy mentoring others, providing constructive feedback, and contributing to a well-organized learning environment. In addition to grading coursework using established rubrics, the role involves tracking student participation, maintaining accurate records, and assisting with updates to course materials and documentation. It offers valuable experience in higher education, instructional support, student development, and educational technology while contributing to the success of both students and academic programs.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Evaluates correspondence, documents, and assessment materials prepared by students as part of their coursework. Maintains a variety of class/student information on the Learning Management System. May tutor individual or small groups of students, as assigned.
  • Grades written assignments totaling at least pages, e.g., essays, position papers, article reviews, not including discussion postings.
  • Monitors student progress and course participation, e.g., on the discussion board, tracks missing assignments, and record/upload scores in the Learning Management System.
  • Grades tests, assignments, and communication postings e.g discussion board for participation, content, and form, per instructor-supplied rubric. Tutors individuals, small groups, and large study sessions as scheduled by the instructor. Edits/updates course syllabus, quizzes, exams, or other logistical documentation.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

A high school diploma or equivalent plus two years of education at an accredited institution in a major or discipline related to the Summary of Duties; OR an associates degree in a discipline related to the Summary of Duties, is required.

  • OR two years of college coursework (approximately 60 credit hours) in a related field.
  • OR one year of college coursework (approximately 30 credit hours) and one year of related experience.
  • OR a high school diploma or GED and two years of related experience.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, Learning Management System (LMS), and presentation software.

Skills

  • Skills in evaluating speeches.

  • Skills in writing lesson plans.

  • Ability to work independently, make decisions, follow verbal and written instructions, and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to assess student work according to faculty and general instructional standards.

About Company

Utah Valley University was established in 1941 as Central Utah Vocational School (CUVS) with the primary function of providing war production training. CUVS was part of the Provo School District located in south Provo. The institution received a state appropriation in March 1945 of $50,000 to operate for the 1945-1947 biennium. In 1947, the school received funding as a permanent state institution. A new site for the school was acquired on University Avenue in Provo in 1948; in the 1952, the state appropriated funding for the first construction on that site. As enrollments grew, the state acquired over 185 acres in southwest Orem and the first building was completed in 1977. Today, the University’s facilities consist of a combined total of 412 acres with 50 buildings with campuses in Orem, Provo, and Heber City and property in Vineyard and at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi.
