Job Summary

An Inspection Specialist (IS) is a senior position on the Inspection Team whose primary role is to inspect customer product for foreign materials using internal x-ray equipment. As a part of a rotation, the IS will assist in supporting other functions of the inspection team including:

1) Shipping and receiving customer loads in a safe and accurate manner
2) Moving pallets via a standup forklift or walk behind pallet jack
3) Manually stacking, wrapping, repacking or taping boxes and pallets of customer product
4) Feeding product lines

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • 2-5 years of warehouse or relevant work experience required
  • Forklift experience preferred
*No experience in x-ray machinery operation is required. All applicable training will take place on-site
Skills
  • Detail Oriented: Requires the ability to pay close attention to detail and stay focused on project at hand
  • Flexibility: Able to adapt to a changing schedule including overtime and weekend depending on business needs
  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to work in fast paced environment with a good sense of urgency
  • Excellent communication skills (must speak English)



Work Context
The Inspection Specialist is a senior member of the Inspection Team, reporting directly to the VP of Operations. This role is important in maintaining a safe working environment, handling customer product with care and ensuring potential contaminants are flagged. As a senior member of the team, job functions may vary - the IS will be able to complete all tasks associated with a standard inspection.
Communication: Clear and consistent communication with the rest of the Inspection team is crucial. This includes timing of pallet movement, stopping product lines and identifying potential hazard points or documentation issues.
Work Setting: The IS will work out of the SafeScan warehouse primarily in the inspection room.
Environmental Conditions: Temperatures will vary depending on the task, but the IS must be able to primarily work in a cold environment that ranges from 40-55 degrees. Ambient temperatures in other areas of the warehouse will vary but can include heat cold and precipitation.
Job Hazards: Creating a safe work environment is a shared responsibility by all employees. As a IS, potentially hazardous conditions that a IS could be exposed to include: forklift operation, severe temperatures and other risks commonly associated with employment in a warehouse.
Work Attire: As a warehouse employee, a IS is required to wear pants and steel-toed boots. Multiple layers are suggested given the wide-ranging variety of temperatures in the inspection room and broader warehouse. Clothing must be clean and suitable for warehouse/inspection environment. Acceptable wear includes: t-shirts, sweatshirts (hooded or crew), business casual or golf shirts, jeans without holes, synthetic fiber long-pants. Unacceptable wear includes: athletic wear, sleeveless shirts, shorts, excessively baggy clothing and apparel with rips or tears. **Compliance with assigned PPE/protective clothing requirements for task/area may is required.
Food Safety & Quality Responsibilities
  • Follow SafeScan SOPs, work instructions, and applicable customer inspection protocols.
  • Protect product safety, legality, quality, and customer product integrity during receiving, staging, inspection, and shipment preparation.
  • Immediately report and escalate:
    • Damaged packaging / compromised product
    • Suspected contamination / foreign material concerns
    • Temperature deviations
    • Equipment malfunctions / abnormal x-ray performance
    • Documentation discrepancies
    • Food defense / security concerns (tampering, unauthorized access)
  • Complete required records accurately and in real time.
Core Job Duties
  • Operate x-ray machinery, or assist machine operators in maintaining line speeds
  • Examine products to verify conformance to quality standards
  • Observe x-ray equipment operations so that malfunctions can be detected, Inspection Team leader notified
  • Documentation & Record Keeping
    • Complete inspection, receiving/shipping, and other assigned records accurately, legibly, and in real time.
    • Do not pre-fill or backdate records.
    • Correct documentation errors according to SafeScan document control practices.
    • Notify supervisor/management immediately when records are missing, incomplete, or inconsistent.
  • Lift finished products, and packed items, manually or using hoists.
  • Load and unload items from machines, conveyors, and conveyances.
  • Help X-ray inspection line by performing duties of lesser skill (e.g. feeding/packing)
  • Place products in equipment or on work surfaces for further inspecting or wrapping.
  • Pack and store materials and products.
  • Transfer finished products, raw materials, tools, or equipment between storage and work areas of the warehouse, by hand or using hand trucks or powered lift trucks.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to stand/sit up to 4-8 hours a day while operating in warehouse environment
  • Must be able to work in a cold environment with a range of temperatures from 40-50 degrees. As well as outside ambient temperatures (including heat, cold and precipitation).
  • Must be able to lift to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to perform repetitive motion tasks with your hands and wrists safely for an 8–10-hour shift
  • Must be able to safely bend and stoop as required during an 8–10-hour shift
  • Must be able to safely twist, grab, and grip using your hands and wrist regularly

Backup Coverage
In the event an Inspection Specialist is absent, on-site Inspection Specialists will assume his/her duties. The VP of Operations and Quality Assurance will provide additional coverage as needed.
