The RDPI (Robotics Deployment & Packaging Innovation) Global Engineering team is seeking a talented and highly organized Lab Manager to contribute to delivering transformational innovation to the business. You will be part of a dynamic team of engineers with the mission to ensure that robotics technologies maturing through the development pipeline are vetted and tested to identify and resolve issues upstream before large-scale deployment and operation. You will manage the infrastructure and operations for the key innovation lab(s) that designers, engineers, and scientists rely on to invent, prototype, test, and perform experiments on the next generation automation technologies for Amazon fulfillment. You will take end-to-end ownership of these lab facilities to transform them into high-performing centers of excellence.

If you are passionate about pioneering new technologies for the real world, innovating, and experimenting to enable delivery of automation systems at scale, we want to talk to you.

Key job responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the lab space, including lab user management, shipping & receiving (ranging from single packages to trailer loads), lab cleanliness standards and upkeep, accurate inventory records and re-stocking, lab operating budget management, safety protocols, vendor relationships, capacity planning, and equipment calibration and maintenance.
  • Maintain accurate lab records, including experiment logs, maintenance schedules, and operational reports; assist in compiling technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drive continuous improvement in lab operation, equipment utilization, and equipment layout.
  • Partner with product designers and engineers to rapidly translate early-stage concepts into functional prototypes and test fixtures.
  • Partner with scientists and test engineers to implement experiments in the lab.
  • Coordinate across mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering stakeholders to prioritize lab activities that accelerate multi-billion-dollar robotics programs.
  • Manage the full lifecycle of lab operations from intake to setup, execution, and teardown. Create and maintain documentation of lab processes, equipment procedures, and procurement/purchasing activities.
  • Assist team members in the setup and operations of complex robotic systems.
  • Lead resource planning and prioritization across programs to maximize efficiency and impact. Implement metrics and tracking systems to measure and improve lab utilization, quality, reliability, and performance outcomes.
  • Document cost-saving initiatives, efficiency improvements, and lessons learned to scale best lab practices.

Amazon.com Inc

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
