The ideal candidate in this position will be interested in providing hands-on technology support in a diverse municipal environment. As an Information Systems Technician II, this position diagnoses and resolves computer and software problems, installs and maintains hardware and applications, supports network connectivity and user access, and helps ensure employees have the technology resources they need to perform their work effectively.

The position offers the opportunity to work with a wide variety of systems, equipment, and departments while participating in technology upgrades and implementation projects. This role is a good fit for someone who values customer service, enjoys troubleshooting new or unusual issues, and is comfortable balancing multiple technical support needs.

We currently have one vacancy in the Department of Information Technology in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur.

Examples of Essential Functions

  • Answer help desk calls and monitors the ticketing system to provide assistance for end user computer related problems including hardware, software, telephones, printers, peripherals, and related equipment; determine severity of problems and resolve or refer to appropriate staff member or vendors
  • Install, upgrade, and configure computers, telephones, printers, and peripherals such as scanners, disk drives, memory, system boards, keyboards, and monitors.
  • Load and test all upgraded operating systems and computer software; maintain detailed installation and upgrade records.
  • Respond to customer service requests that require excellent customer service skills and technical proficiency in regards to hardware and software problems.
  • Diagnose computer and software problems; perform routine repairs and replacements; contact vendors and make arrangements for repairs.
  • Install and support a variety of department-specific software packages.
  • Maintain the Citys technology equipment inventory; receive and store all related hardware and software; process and send equipment to vendors.
  • Perform security administration for network resources; maintain and administer network user and machine accounts; set file and share permissions to allow end users to access network resources.
  • Assist in the installation, setup, support, configuration, and backup of network systems, servers, and infrastructure; diagnose and resolve network connectivity issues for workstations, telephones, and printers.
  • Administer and troubleshoot multimedia; maintain digital video recording systems for court session testimony, City Council presentations, Public Safety, and other City departments.
  • Update the City documentation library to include documentation on equipment, software, fixes, repairs, contact information and other information needed by the department.
  • May develop or assist in developing custom applications, spreadsheets, or scripts as requested by users.
  • Participate in evaluating software and hardware systems; install and test trial software, and participate or lead implementation projects or training.
  • Remain abreast of new and emerging technology trends, and relevant computing equipment and systems.

Minimum Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.*

Education:

Associates degree or two years (60 semester/90 quarter hours) of college level course work in computer science, information systems, business, or a closely related field.

  • One year of work experience in computer support beyond the three year requirement will substitute for the Associates degree requirement.

Work Experience:

Three years of increasingly responsible computer support experience is required.

  • Bachelors degree or four years (120 semester/180 quarter hours) or more of college level course work in computer science or information systems will substitute for one year of the required work experience.

License:

Valid drivers license.

Examination Process:

Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online assessments which include a Written Examination, Customer Service skills test, Cognitive Abilities Test, and an Employee Personality Profile; along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:

The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.

Appointment and Certification:

Appointments to positions in the Citys Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a persons rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.

Probationary Period:

Certification of Eligibles, Appointments, and Probation (Rule VII, Section 12)

Classified employees who are newly hired, promoted, reclassified, transferred, or who voluntarily demote to a lower position are subject to a probation period.

The only exception is if an employee chooses to voluntarily demote back to the exact job they previously held within 24 months of being promoted.
