    Summary:

    Performs patient care activities and non-professional services. These include addressing the personal, physical and emotional needs of the neonate and families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Practice must be consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the Nursing Department and Medical Center administration. Population served based on scope of services in the department

    Responsibilities:

     

    1. Assists in the delivery of patient care by performing, specific patient care tasks per scope of service and as directed by the Registered Nurse.
    2. Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges, and transport of patients.
    3. Obtains and records Temperature, Pulse, Respirations, Blood Pressure, Oxygen saturation, and weights. Reports abnormalities and condition changes to primary nurse promptly.
    4. Demonstrates competence in advanced skills to include, but not limited to: Assisting with setting up for circumcisions, inspecting equipment and removing equipment after procedures. Performing hearing screens on newborns. Cleans restocks and maintains patient care supplies for the neonate. Performs newborn care includes bathing, oral suctioning, rocking/soothing and feeding the assigned infants and performs post-mortem care.
    5. Communicates effectively and frequently with health care team members to share information and solve problems in a positive and result-oriented manner both verbally and electronically.
      1. Documents legibly on all hospital forms using standardized abbreviations.
      2. Gets patient report from the RN at the beginning of the shift. Gives end-of-shift report to the primary nurse at the end of the shift.
    6. Provides personalized care to patients and families.
    7. Utilizes available educational materials, programs, nursing literature and resource personnel for career development and attends mandatory in-services to maintain unit competencies.
    8. Utilizes material, equipment, and time in a safe, therapeutic and cost-effective manner.
    9. Assists with appropriate tasks in all code situations (i.e. obtaining equipment, etc.) under the direction of the Neonatal team.
    10. Adheres to organizational infection control practices and policies and to established safety and security policies. Demonstrates knowledge of newborn identification/security policy and follows procedure appropriately.
    11. Assists with maintaining the general cleanliness and appearance of areas on the unit, including, but not limited to:
      1. Cleans neonate bedside, bili lights, breast pumps, syringe pumps, scales, IV poles after use.
      2. Cleans refrigerators, sinks, counters as assigned and empties trash in nursing station as requested.
      3. Cleans other areas such as storage areas, linen cart and staff lounge as requested.
      4. Cleans, restocks, and maintains patient care supplies. i.e stocks infant bedsides and NICU rooms, circ cart, central line cart, restock and checks for expiration of neonate formula, cleans and restocks internal infant transporter
      5. Cleans instruments and prepares supplies for sterile processing by CSR

    Education and Experience Requirements: 
    • High school diploma or GED. 
    • AHA Basic Life Support 

    Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements:
    • General knowledge of high school subject matter including sciences, simple medical procedures 
    / terminology, and office equipment. 

    License, Registration, or Certification Requirements:
    • BLS certification is required.
