Description

Industrial Weld Overlay Equipment Specialist

What a typical week can look like

Early in the week, you’re in the warehouse (about 70% of the role), inspecting weld overlay rigs, calibrating welding, gouging, and blasting systems, and staging gear so it’s safe, organized, and ready. You update equipment logs, reconcile consumables, and verify checklists so nothing goes missing. Later, you might ship out to a refinery or power plant (roughly 30% travel) to set up the same systems in the field, confirm parameters for safe operation and quality, and work side-by-side with welders and NDE personnel to demonstrate proper use and positioning. Your day closes with good housekeeping, equipment status notes, and a handoff plan for the next shift.

Compensation & schedule

  • $20–$27/hr base pay.
  • Role is approximately 70% local warehouse/shop work and 30% traveling field assignments.
  • During field rotations, earn significantly more on a 7/12 schedule with straight time, overtime, and double-time on Sundays and Holidays.
  • Combination of local and field work averages about $70K per year.

Core purpose

Own the readiness and reliability of welding, gouging, and blasting equipment for in-house and field use. Provide hands-on repair, calibration, and set-up support. As training and certifications allow, contribute to NDE activities (VT, PT, and UT thickness) for weld samples and projects. When not traveling, focus on warehouse and equipment maintenance duties.

What you’ll do

  • Stage, maintain, and verify all materials, equipment, and tooling for each project—safe, reliable, and ready from unload through completion.
  • Assist with equipment logs and manage site inventory of materials and consumables.
  • Set up and install equipment for weld overlay projects with safety, efficiency, and strong housekeeping in mind.
  • Confirm weld overlay machines and support gear operate within safe parameters to achieve quality results.
  • Partner with welding and NDE teams to demonstrate correct equipment use and positioning to meet quality standards.
  • Follow all applicable safety policies, regulations, and safe work practices at all times.
  • Meet quality expectations while keeping productivity targets and schedules on track.
  • Account for and properly store equipment using the original equipment checklist; tag and report missing or defective items.
  • Support craft personnel (welders, laborers) on various project tasks as needed.
  • Assist in the warehouse with repairs, testing, fabrication R&D, and general duties.
  • Model teamwork and cooperation with colleagues and customers.

Minimum qualifications

  • At least 1 year of hands-on experience in weld overlay and/or industrial construction preferred.
  • Ability to operate common welding-industry tools and equipment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency, including common software such as MS Excel.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Flexibility to work varying schedules as needed.
  • Conduct duties ethically and comply with company policies and employment screening requirements.

Physical demands

Work occurs in and around heavy construction and maintenance sites under varying weather and environmental conditions. Expect standing, walking, and climbing ladders/scaffolding for extended periods, plus bending, stooping, pushing, carrying, and maneuvering equipment up to 100 pounds. Must be able to work in confined, noisy spaces with elevated temperatures and humidity.
