    Description

Industrial Power & Controls Systems Engineer

    A day in this role

Morning stand-up wraps and you’re reviewing a system architecture for a new piece of industrial machinery. You translate requirements into power distribution topologies, decide on PLC and I/O strategies, and sketch panel layouts. By late morning, you’re collaborating with mechanical and software peers to ensure cable routing, heat dissipation, and control logic align across the machine.

After lunch, you refine wiring diagrams and safety circuits, specify variable frequency drives and motor controls, and validate sensor selections. A quick design review follows, where you defend trade-offs and incorporate feedback. You close the day by drafting a test plan for system validation and scheduling time on a prototype to troubleshoot AC/DC behavior under load. On some weeks, you’ll travel to a customer or production site to inspect builds, assist with commissioning, or diagnose a field issue.

    What you’ll do

    • Design, develop, and maintain electrical and electromechanical systems for complex industrial and mobile equipment.
    • Create system architectures and detailed electrical designs that meet functional and performance specifications.
    • Engineer power distribution, motor controls, and control systems; integrate PLCs, VFDs, sensors, and related automation components.
    • Work with AC and DC systems, including higher-voltage power distribution (e.g., 480 VAC) and electrical traction applications.
    • Support engine, generator, and auxiliary power system integration.
    • Produce schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and complete documentation.
    • Collaborate closely with mechanical, controls, software, manufacturing, and field service teams to ensure seamless integration.
    • Lead or contribute to design reviews; guide projects from concept through testing, validation, and production release.
    • Develop test plans; execute validation, troubleshoot issues, and implement robust fixes.
    • Provide technical assistance to manufacturing and field teams; offer mentorship to less experienced engineers and designers.
    • Continuously improve reliability, performance, safety, cost, and manufacturability of existing systems.
    • Ensure designs adhere to applicable electrical standards, safety requirements, and best practices.
    • Travel occasionally for inspections, testing, troubleshooting, and other engineering activities.
    • Perform additional engineering responsibilities as assigned.

    What you’ll bring

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program.
    • 3+ years building and maintaining electrical or electromechanical systems.
    • Hands-on experience designing, troubleshooting, or integrating electrical systems in complex machinery.
    • Strong command of core EE principles and their practical application.
    • Effectiveness working across multiple engineering disciplines.
    • Experience participating in and leading technical design reviews.
    • Analytical mindset with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
    • Clear communication of technical information to engineering and non-engineering audiences.

    Preferred experience

    • Industrial automation and machine control systems.
    • Motor controls and variable frequency drives.
    • 480 VAC or other higher-voltage systems.
    • AC/DC power systems or electrical traction.
    • Generators, engine controls, or mobile power.
    • Electrical systems for heavy equipment, construction, agricultural, material handling, transportation, or other complex electromechanical products.
    • Development of schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel designs.
    • Electrical system architecture and subsystem integration.
    • System testing, validation, and troubleshooting.
    • Providing technical direction to engineers, designers, or technicians.
    • Familiarity with applicable electrical codes, safety standards, and industrial practices.
    • Experience in manufacturing or production environments.

    Where you’ll thrive

You’re a hands-on engineer (Engineer II level) who sees beyond components to complete machines. Backgrounds spanning heavy equipment, industrial machinery, automation, robotics, agricultural and construction equipment, material handling, mobile platforms, and generator-based systems tend to excel here.
