Temporary position. No benefits. Assists the Director of the Office of Laboratory and Field Safety with implementing various lab safety programs on campus. Works in coordination with campus community while providing laboratory safety services (chemical, biological, radiological, and laser).
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, environmental health & safety, health physics, chemistry, biology, or a related field.
One year of experience in a health and safety profession or in a laboratory setting.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including experience with group presentations.
Demonstrated computer experience with business software applications, including MS Word, Excel and/or Access.
Ability to work varied hours depending on campus activities, training schedules, etc.
Experience with OSHA and EPA regulations and their application in a laboratory setting.
Ability to pass a HAZMAT medical examination and be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection devices.
Ability to lift safety equipment weighing up to fifty pounds and move fifty-five gallon drums with appropriate equipment.
Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive University vehicles and respond to after-hours emergencies.
Knowledge of use and operation of health & safety monitoring/testing equipment including but not limited to gas monitors and personal protective equipment.
Report writing experience.
Demonstrated ability to build rapport, communicate effectively, and project a positive image.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational/Environmental Health, Health Physics or a related scientific discipline.
OSHA HAZWOPER Technician Training
Experience working in a higher education environment.
Research experience.
Knowledge of use and operation of radiation survey equipment.
Certified Industrial Hygienist preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities
Assists the director of the Office of Laboratory and Field Safety with the implementation of lab safety programs to safeguard employees and ensure legal compliance.
Conducts lab inspections, generates reports and ensures resultant violations are addressed by the department and laboratory with appropriate timeframes.
Conducts lab accident investigations.
Assists with hazard assessments to develop lab door signage.
Performs ventilation testing and air sampling.
Assists in safe transportation and/or disposal of hazardous material.
Calibrates and maintains equipment.
Maintains databases for biological, chemical, radiological and laser safety items.
Assists the director of the Office of Laboratory and Field Safety with safety committee duties and activities (Lab Safety Committee, Radiation Safety Committee, Laser Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee).
Develops and conducts training (conventional and online) to employees and students on environmental, health and safety topics.
Responds to hazardous materials releases on campus and assists in/or abates the release of hazardous materials.
