Industrial Air Compressor Field Technician

Location: Staunton/Roanoke/Lynchburg, VA
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
Compensation: Starting at $25.00–$35.00 per hour (full-time, hourly) + $3,000 sign-on bonus

What your day looks like

You start your morning from home, hop into your company vehicle, and head to customer sites within a three-hour radius. One visit might be commissioning a new rotary screw unit; the next could be troubleshooting a Centac or ECC compressor with precision measuring tools at your side. You’ll read schematics, check operating parameters, swap components, and validate performance so systems run to spec. Along the way, you’ll speak with operators and plant leaders, explain findings in plain language, and suggest proactive services like Preventative Maintenance, Diagnostics, Audits, and Leak Detection.

As jobs wrap up, you coordinate parts with the Service Coordinator, log details on your tablet or smartphone, and share tips with an apprentice or fellow tech you’re mentoring. On start-ups, you provide hands-on support to ensure equipment operates to the customer’s requirements, with limited guidance from a Master Technician.

Core responsibilities

• Install, commission, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain rotary screw and reciprocating compressors, as well as Centac and ECC units and related compressed air system components.
• Perform preventative maintenance and accurately document service activities.
• Provide technical assistance during pre-commissioning, start-ups, installations, and repairs.
• Diagnose issues using precision measuring instruments and interpret wiring diagrams/schematics.
• Partner with the Service Coordinator to source parts and supplies for efficient repairs.
• Communicate clearly—verbally and in writing—with customers and teammates.
• Coach apprentices and other Field Service Technicians.
• Educate customers on IR solutions including Preventative Maintenance, Diagnostics, Audits, and Leak Detection.

Required qualifications

• 2+ years troubleshooting industrial or commercial mechanical systems.
• Valid driver’s license held for at least 12 months. No major or frequent traffic violations, including DUI within the previous 5 years; hit & run; license suspension; reckless/careless driving; or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions within the previous 3 years.
• Comfort with highly physical work: frequent hand use, walking, stooping, kneeling, and the ability to lift/move items within safety policy limits.
• High school diploma or equivalent.

Technical competencies

• Read and interpret electrical schematics and diagrams.
• Advanced network systems installations (IMMC/ASC, X Series Automation).
• Basic vibration analysis/troubleshooting.
• Fundamentals of air quality and treatment (compressors/dryers/filtration).
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; proficient with handheld devices (smartphone/iPad) and network-based tools.
• Practical, cost-conscious travel practices.

Preferred background

• 2+ years specifically in industrial air compressor maintenance.
• Education in Electrical/Electronic Technology or HVAC, with exposure to AC/DC circuits, schematics, motors/controls, PLCs, HVAC electricity and controls, refrigeration systems, and refrigerant/EPA certification.
• Veterans and Active-Duty Military encouraged to apply.

Travel, tools, and training

• Daily travel within a three-hour radius to customer sites.
• Occasional training travel 1–2 times per year, one week at a time.
• Company vehicle and fuel card provided.
• On-call rotation after your first 90 days: a 1-week, 24/7 rotation that may occur as often as every 4 weeks or less frequently, per hiring manager.
