Position Summary
The Tax Manager - Indirect Tax is a hands-on role responsible for managing the company's indirect tax compliance obligations. The position focuses on sales and use tax, property, gross receipts, and other transaction-based taxes. It is execution-oriented and includes the direct preparation, review, and filing of returns, as well as day-to-day issue resolution. The role also partners with accounting, procurement, and operations to ensure accurate tax treatment across service, manufacturing, distribution, and sales activities.
Key Responsibilities
Compile monthly sales data for the third-party return preparer, review preliminary liabilities, and confirm required sales tax payments
Prepare, review, and file property tax and other transaction-based tax returns across multiple jurisdictions
Perform monthly and quarterly indirect tax account reconciliations and resolve variances
Analyze the taxability of products, customers, and transactions
Support indirect tax planning for capital projects and acquisitions
Identify and implement process improvements and internal controls for indirect tax compliance
Conduct transaction taxability reviews and support exposure and nexus analyses
Monitor compliance calendars and ensure timely filing and payment of indirect taxes
Manage indirect tax audits, including data collection, document preparation, and draft responses
Document processes and maintain workpapers to support filings and audit defense
Maintain exemption certificates and resale documentation
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field
At least 3 years of hands-on indirect tax experience, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial environment
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
Strong Excel skills
High attention to detail and the ability to work independently while meeting recurring deadlines
Solid understanding of state and local indirect tax rules and filing requirements
Experience preparing returns, reconciliations, and audit support documentation
Effective written and verbal communication skills with practical problem-solving ability
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with multi-state indirect tax compliance
Experience working directly with tax authorities on audits or notices
