ROLE SUMMARY

Howard University Hospital is seeking an HVAC/R Technician I to keep the systems that make safe patient care possible running around the clock. In this role you will inspect, troubleshoot, repair and maintain the hospital's HVAC, refrigeration, steam and related commercial and industrial equipment — from centrifugal chillers and air handling systems to heat exchangers, cooling towers and pressure reducing stations. Working under general supervision within the Engineering department, you will keep the building systems that patients and staff depend on operating safely and in compliance with state, federal and Joint Commission standards.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Maintain, install and repair a wide variety of HVAC/R equipment, including steam turbines, steam absorption units, centrifugal chillers, direct expansion units, heat exchangers, air handling systems, exhaust and intake fans, water coolers, air filters, steam and air pressure reducing stations, humidification and dehumidification equipment, pressure and non-pressure piping systems, and cooling towers.
  • Measure, cut, thread and bend pipe and tubing to the specifications contained in the work request.
  • Study engineering drawings, technical manuals and sketches to identify and diagnose potential equipment operating problems.
  • Maintain, repair and replace valves and fittings in steam, domestic hot water, heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain, replace and repair steam regulating systems and other auxiliary equipment.
  • Maintain, replace and repair shell and tube heat exchangers.
  • Perform urgent, corrective, routine and requisitioned repairs to refrigeration and air conditioning systems, domestic hot water systems, and building heating and cooling systems.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate compliance with state, federal and Joint Commission regulations and standards.
  • Prepare stock repair parts lists and project material lists.
  • Prepare and record accurate preventive maintenance documentation.
  • Support the Health Sciences Compliance Program, the Howard University Code of Ethics and HIPAA privacy requirements, and maintain the confidentiality of patients, families and staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a Journeyman program.
  • Five (5) years of experience with HVAC/R systems.
  • Universal Refrigeration License (non-automotive).
  • Working knowledge of heating and cooling air handling systems.
  • Working knowledge of fluid systems and brazing techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of and adherence to all applicable safety regulations.
  • Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions and to apply sound judgment in carrying them out.
  • Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing conditions and priorities.
  • Time management skills, with the ability to complete multiple tasks within defined timeframes.
  • Strong customer service skills and a consistently professional, courteous manner with patients, guests and co-workers.
  • Ability to walk and stand frequently throughout the shift, and to bend, lift and carry up to 35 lbs. — and more than 35 lbs. with equipment — on an occasional basis.
  • Availability to work days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required to maintain continuous hospital operations.

PAY

This position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement between Howard University Hospital and Local 2094. The hourly base pay range for this position is $25.03 – $40.06, determined by the Local 2094 wage scale for this classification. Placement within the range is governed by the applicable CBA provisions. Shift, weekend and other differentials are paid in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
