The Controls Engineer is responsible for controls engineering, design, programming and service support for commercial control projects. Respond to customer needs by identifying system and product solutions. Assist customers in answering technical control questions. Conduct customer visits, events and training sessions with mechanical engineers, mechanical contractors and building owners. Communicate project changes to team members and customers.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Create sequences of operation, select bills of material, develop comprehensive bid strategies, design network layouts and produce electrical schematics — controls design is the primary focus of the role
Perform programming on system- and network-level controllers
Support commissioning and troubleshooting of HVAC control systems
Generate controls proposals that include a detailed scope of work based on project sequences of operation, specifications and drawings in accordance with division standards
Gather project design changes from the field team and create as-built drawings
Provide technical support to engineers, contractors and building owners
Provide controls training to mechanical engineers, contractors and building owners
Answer controls technical support calls
Create application notes, technical papers, service notes and training documentation
Accompany the sales team on occasional customer site visits throughout Southern California, including San Diego (~10% of time)
Adhere to safety standards with a high degree of regard toward employee and subcontractor safety
Critical Knowledge and Skills:
HVAC industry experience and knowledge are required; candidates must understand HVAC terminology, system components and equipment, and how HVAC systems operate and must not be starting from scratch in the industry
Controls design experience is the top technical priority, including sequences of operation, controls drawings, schematics, I/O selection, BOM development, commissioning and troubleshooting
Understanding of mechanical systems and basic electrical knowledge
Commercial HVAC experience strongly preferred; experience with larger, more complex HVAC systems may also translate
Experience installing, programming and commissioning HVAC controllers
Experience with Automated Logic (ALC) is a plus and is particularly relevant to this environment
Ability to read architectural, mechanical and electrical blueprints
Understanding of construction documentation, procedures and construction processes
Proficiency with drafting software applications
Ability to communicate effectively and work in a team environment; must be client-facing with a conversational, professional demeanor suitable for engaging with design engineers, contractors and building owners
Good judgment, planning and multi-tasking skills
