POSITION PURPOSE:The City of Birmingham, Michigan (EOE) is seeking highly motivated candidates for a paid Human Resources (HR) Internship.Under supervision of the Human Resources Manager, the HR Intern will perform a variety of function to assist the department in its operations. Work assignments and projects will involve personnel administration, recruitment and selection, labor relations, benefits administration, employee recognition and engagement, and other HR activities.The purpose of this internship is to add value to the City's operations by applying knowledge acquired in coursework studies, while preparing the intern for entry into the Human Resources and/or Management field with a diverse work experience in a professional environment.FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:This list is not to be treated as all inclusive. Prepares routine correspondenceManage assigned projects for recruitment, recordkeeping, and benefitsAssist with the recruitment process by posting positions, scheduling interviews, and sitting on interview panelsMaintain records for personnel files, workers comp cases, and FMLA casesAssist with benefit administrationAssist with the planning of employee engagement eventsAdditional related responsibilities as assigned.NECESSARY SKILLS:Attention to detail and accuracyAbility to handle and maintain confidential informationExcellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skillsTime management, analytical, and customer service skillsProficient computer skillsAbility to learn quickly on the jobEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:Current Junior, Senior, or Graduate-level student enrolled in Business/Public Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Development/Psychology, Management, or other related programAbility to work individually, within a group and under general supervisionWorking knowledge of Microsoft Office and other common software applications including a desire and ability to quickly learn new programsPHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:Must be able to lift up to 50lbsMust be able to sit for long periods of timeTOTAL REWARDS:Flexible schedule between 8:00am and 5:00pm from Monday - Friday, 28 hours per weekParking (Pierce parking structure)EQUIPMENT:Office space including desk, computer, and phoneCity provided office badge and fob
