Description

At ProService Hawaii, our mission is to empower employers to succeed in Hawaii. For more than two decades, local businesses across every island have trusted us to take on their toughest people challenges — from payroll and benefits to the complex, high-stakes world of HR compliance. When an employer faces a workplace investigation, a difficult termination, or a regulatory question they cannot afford to get wrong, they turn to our HR experts for guidance that protects both their business and their people.

This is a role for someone who thinks like an attorney and connects like a trusted advisor. As an HR Consultant / Staff Attorney, you will guide clients through the moments where employment law and real business decisions collide — interpreting regulations, weighing risk, and helping leaders act with confidence under pressure. You will also serve ProService directly through contract review and legal drafting. Success means clients who feel protected, informed, and genuinely well-served, and internal partners who know they can rely on your judgment.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  • Advise clients across diverse industries on complex HR and employment compliance matters, translating regulations such as EEOC, ADA, FMLA, HFLL, and wage-and-hour law into clear, business-forward guidance.
  • Guide employers through workplace investigations and respond to internal complaints and agency matters, including EEOC, HCRC, DLIR, and DOL inquiries.
  • Develop claim-prevention strategies that reduce client exposure to harassment, discrimination, and retaliation risk.
  • Provide internal legal support to ProService, including contract review and the drafting of legal documents, memos, and correspondence.
  • Monitor evolving federal, state, and local employment regulations and fold new requirements into client recommendations.
  • Manage a portfolio of client relationships against defined response and resolution timelines, logging every interaction accurately in Salesforce.

IS THIS ROLE RIGHT FOR YOU?

This role asks you to hold two demanding standards at once: the rigor of a practicing attorney and the warmth of a client-facing consultant. You will field sensitive, time-pressured questions where the right answer is not always the easy one, and you will need to deliver defensible guidance that clients can actually put to work. An active license to practice law and sound legal judgment are not optional here — they are the job. So is the ability to move quickly, since clients expect acknowledgment within hours and resolution within days on most matters.

If that sounds energizing rather than draining, you will be in good company. You will not be doing this alone — you will work alongside cross-functional client service teams and a Chief Counsel who backs your development, with colleagues to pressure-test your thinking on the hardest calls. We hold a high bar, but we pair it with real support, so you can give clients answers you stand behind.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE TEAM

We are looking for a licensed attorney who can turn dense regulation into practical direction and build trust with clients quickly. Just as important as your legal knowledge are the competencies that make advice land: sharp analysis, sound judgment, clear communication in writing and out loud, careful listening, and unwavering integrity.

You're probably a fit if:

  • You have advised businesses on legal or HR matters and made complex rules feel simple and actionable. When a client calls anxious about a termination decision, you walk them through the risks in plain language and leave them clear on their next step — and confident it will hold up.
  • You conduct thorough legal research and draft clear correspondence. You take an ambiguous regulatory question, dig to the root of it, and produce an answer a client can rely on without needing a second opinion.
  • You manage multiple client relationships against tight, defined timelines. You keep every commitment visible and logged, so a client never wonders whether their request slipped through the cracks.
  • You listen closely and communicate with clarity, one-on-one or in front of a room. You read what a stressed client actually needs, then explain a hard answer in a way that leaves them feeling heard rather than lectured.
  • You hold the line on integrity, even under pressure to cut a corner. When the fast answer and the right answer diverge, you choose the one that protects the client — and you tell them why.
