Salary: $22.00 per hour
Position Summary
The Housekeeper is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, safe, and welcoming environment throughout the transitional housing residence and drop-in center in Yonkers. The position performs thorough cleaning of both residential and commercial/common spaces and helps ensure that the facility consistently meets appropriate health, safety, and cleanliness standards.
The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently while also working cooperatively with program, maintenance, security, and administrative staff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform thorough daily cleaning of residential, administrative, and common areas throughout the facility.
  • Clean and sanitize resident rooms, bathrooms, showers, hallways, offices, lounges, dining areas, and other assigned spaces.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and polish floors as required.
  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, including doorknobs, handrails, counters, tables, switches, and shared equipment.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including toilets, sinks, showers, mirrors, floors, and fixtures.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and properly dispose of waste in designated areas.
  • Maintain cleanliness of entrances, hallways, stairways, and other high-traffic areas.
  • Perform floor care, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and polishing as appropriate.
  • Handle laundry duties, including washing, drying, folding, and properly storing linens, towels, and other facility laundry.
  • Make beds and change linens when required.
  • Clean and prepare rooms or sleeping areas for new residents or guests as directed.
  • Safely operate vacuums, mops, floor-care equipment, and other cleaning tools and equipment.
  • Properly use, label, store, and maintain cleaning chemicals and supplies in accordance with safety guidelines.
  • Follow established cleaning schedules, checklists, sanitation procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Monitor inventory of cleaning supplies, paper products, laundry supplies, and related materials and notify management when supplies need to be reordered.
  • Promptly report maintenance concerns, safety hazards, damaged property, pest concerns, plumbing issues, or other facility problems to appropriate staff.
  • Assist with deep cleaning and special cleaning projects as needed.
  • Respond promptly to spills, accidents, or other situations requiring immediate cleaning or sanitation.
  • Work cooperatively with maintenance, security, case management, and program staff to support the overall operation of the facility.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries and interact respectfully with residents, drop-in center guests, staff, visitors, and vendors.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding residents and program activities.
  • Perform other housekeeping and facility-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous housekeeping, janitorial, custodial, hotel, shelter, residential, or commercial cleaning experience preferred.
  • Experience cleaning both residential and commercial spaces is helpful.
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning, sanitation, and disinfecting techniques.
  • Ability to safely handle cleaning chemicals, tools, and equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to follow cleaning checklists, instructions, and established safety procedures.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to complete assigned responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively in an environment serving individuals experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with residents, guests, coworkers, and supervisors.
Physical Requirements
The position requires regular physical activity, including:
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Bending, reaching, kneeling, and climbing stairs.
  • Pushing and pulling cleaning carts, vacuums, and equipment.
  • Lifting and carrying cleaning supplies, laundry, trash, and other materials.
  • Performing repetitive cleaning activities throughout the workday.
