Pay Range: $17.75hr - $20.43hr

Job Overview:

The Hospital Specimen Technician is responsible for the preparation of patient specimens in a hospital location. The Hospital Specimen Technician must be able to perform and follow all pre-analytical processing procedures with accuracy and in a timely manner. The roles and responsibilities below are specific to samples being performed for laboratory testing.

Specimen Processing & Test Send Out Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates excellent proficiency in test ordering policies, hospital processing procedures, specimen requirements for test ordering, sample preparation, Quantum, and compliance/legal requirements.
  • Knowledge and competency of hospital LIS system.
  • Print performed testing reports.
  • Demonstrates ability to interpret specimen flow/tracking data utilizing all available reports and resources.
  • Responsible for supply ordering processes.
  • Performs remote accessioning (pre-accessioning).

Problem Resolution Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot and resolve specimen type issues, missing information, TIQ, TNP, additional sample requests, and other issues related to the area of responsibility.

Customer Service Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates exceptional customer service skills as the liaison between customers and the performing laboratory to provide proactive customer support.
  • Responsible for managing inbound calls with a positive interaction.
  • Communicates and collaborates effectively with hospital laboratory staff, the sales team, and other functions in the organization.
  • Communicates information effectively regarding problem-solving with specimens, test cancellations, testing requirements, and billing requirements with hospital staff.

Required Work Experience:

  • 1 3 years of working experience.

Preferred Work Experience:

  • Medical background preferred, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory.
  • Previous experience in a hospital laboratory environment preferred.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
  • Ability to work in a biohazard environment while practicing good safety habits.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods.

Skills:

  • Handles multiple tasks simultaneously and works in a production environment.
  • Hospital LIS systems knowledge or experience is a plus.
  • Command of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Client interfacing role requiring strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated data entry skills to effectively utilize the organization's system and hospital client systems.
  • Maintains composure while working under pressure.
  • Reflects good judgment when determining what action to take when resolving problems.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive environment.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and the ability to adapt to change.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
