Department Information

The Honors College was founded in 2009 and leads the campus in retention and 4-year graduation numbers. We serve approximately 800 undergraduate students. The Honors Student Support Specialist will join a team of experienced student support specialists.

Job Summary

The Honors Student Support Specialist serves Honors College Scholars by supplying academic progress, enrollment, and retention oversight to meet scholarship requirements that complement major-specific advising in the schools. The Student Support Specialist also serves Honors Program students in participating school honors programs. This position participates in the development, implementation, and assessment of high impact co- and extracurricular programming.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Works directly with students to provide advising, support, and guidance for honors coursework and honors contracts within the scholars curriculum.
  • Assists students in accessing relevant resources to support student success efforts of the Honors College.
  • Monitors scholarship and program compliance each semester.
  • Works with other honors staff to collect, analyze and report data on program effectiveness and scholar progress on a semester basis.
  • Works with honors staff and students to develop and implement co- and extracurricular programming throughout the year that complements other scholarship programming in the College, enriches academic programs, helps with retention, and honors the intent of the scholarship donors.
  • Participates in other recruiting, student support, community-building, and programming activities for the College.
  • Represents the College on select campus committees and/or as a liaison to other units on campus such as Housing.
  • Participates in the review of applicants and selection of candidates for on-campus scholarship interviews.
  • Participates in recruitment functions and events to promote the Honors College.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that offer support for students in crisis, facing adversity or challenges, or who belong to an under-represented or minority student population.
  • Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting one-on-one to discuss support needs, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives.
  • Places an emphasis on confidentiality of student concerns, university policy compliance, and a culture of care within all direct student interactions.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student support goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
  • Projects outcomes for support services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student support initiatives against projected outcomes; regularly prepares reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • Serves on committees and performs student support research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
  • May provide guidance to other student support staff; makes process recommendations to manager for improved delivery of service.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelors degree in education, public affairs, public health, counseling, social work, business, or a related field.

Preferred

  • Masters degree in higher education, student affairs, or a related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in student services, higher education, social work, counseling, law, or a related field.

Preferred

  • Experience working with high ability students and/or high impact academic practices.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$45,000.00 - 50,000.00 per year based on education and experience
