A day in the life

You start your morning representing Detmer & Sons—now part of the Ace Hardware family—bringing Helpful to Your Home. Backed by Ace’s century-long reputation, you deliver residential plumbing service with care, craftsmanship, and clear communication.

What your day looks like

• Assemble water, drain, and gas piping systems using couplings, clamps, screws, bolts, cements/solvents, and join methods such as soldering, brazing, and welding.
• Install pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, and household equipment (think dishwashers, water heaters), plus fixtures like sinks and toilets with hand and power tools.
• Create clean openings in walls, floors, or ceilings to route pipe and fittings with the right tools and safety practices.
• Pressure-test with air or water and read gauges to pinpoint leaks before turning over the job.
• Secure piping with steel hangers/supports tied into ceiling joists for long-term reliability.
• Lay underground storm, sanitary, and potable water lines and extend runs to connect to interior plumbing and final fixtures.
• Tackle planning and calculations for unique or large-scale residential projects.
• Prepare clear written cost estimates and handle contract negotiations professionally.
• Perform precision welding on small-diameter or specialty piping, including computer-assisted methods and microchip-fabrication-grade techniques when required.
• Strengthen customer relationships by diagnosing issues, presenting options, recommending better methods/equipment, and earning referrals.
• Document all service and installation details—forms, reports, logs, and records—inside SAWIN mobile and other required formats within set timelines.
• Consistently meet daily, weekly, and monthly sales goals while minimizing callbacks.
• Support special projects and step into additional duties as assigned.

What sets you up for success

• 3+ years of relevant residential plumbing experience and/or formal training.
• Valid driver’s license with a solid driving record.

What you need to succeed:

• Able to pass a drug screening and background check (random testing may occur)

Physical demands

• Manual dexterity in hands and fingers to safely operate common hand and power tools used in plumbing.
• Routinely lift, carry, push, or pull up to 100 pounds.
• Frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching in all directions.
• Maintain balance when working off the ground using ladders, scaffolds, and/or mechanical lifts.
• Comfort climbing stairs and ladders and working at heights or in precarious positions.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods.
• Work outdoors in varying weather, including heat and cold.
• Clear hearing and speech for effective, safe communication.
• Visual acuity to perform maintenance tasks and read blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
