Roadway Maintenance Technician
Help Keep Roads Safe for the Traveling Public
Roy Jorgensen Associates, Inc. (Jorgensen) has been a leader in highway infrastructure maintenance and operations for more than 65 years. Our teams work every day to keep highways, bridges, roadways, drainage systems, signs, guardrails, and roadside assets safe and operational.
We are currently seeking full-time Roadway Maintenance Technicians to join our roadway maintenance team. This is a hands-on position for individuals who enjoy working outdoors, operating equipment, solving problems, and contributing directly to public safety.
What You'll Actually Do
No two days are exactly the same. As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you'll work as part of a crew performing roadway maintenance and emergency response activities on active highways and roadways.
Typical duties include:
Picking up debri s, litter, and roadway hazards that could impact driver safety
Installing, repairing, and replacing guardrail, signs, delineators, and other roadway safety devices
Repairing potholes and pavement damage using asphalt and concrete materials
Cleaning ditches, culv erts, storm drains, and drainage systems to prevent flooding
Removing damaged roadway infrastructure following vehicle impacts
Mowing, trimming vegetation, clearing brush, and maintaining highway rights-of-way
Setting up traffic control devices, cones, signs, and lane closures to protect work zones
Responding to vehicle accidents, severe weather, flooding, and other roadway emergencies
Assisting with snow and ice removal operations, including plowing, spreading salt, and clearing ice during winter weather events
Loading, unloading, and transporting materials, tools, and equipment
Performing inspections and basic maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment
Using smartphones and company applications to document completed work, report roadway conditions, and receive assignments
This position regularly works alongside live traffic and requires strict adherence to safety procedures and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) requirements.
What to Expect
This is not a warehouse or shop position. Successful candidates are comfortable:
Working outdoors year-round in heat, cold, rain, snow, humidity, and changing weather conditions
Performing physically demanding work throughout the day
Standing, walking, climbing, digging, lifting, carrying, and using hand tools
Working near moving traffic and construction equipment
Responding to emergency callouts when roadway conditions require immediate action
Working occasional nights, weekends, holidays, and extended shifts during storms or emergency events
Being part of an on-call rotation
Highway maintenance is essential work that keeps roads safe and open for the public 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Experience Preferred
Guardrail repair or installation
Asphalt or concrete repairs
Traffic control/MOT work
Mowing and vegetation management
Drainage maintenance
Equipment operation (skid steer, loader, roller, forklift, tractors, etc.)
Flagger, MOT, or Traffic Control certifications
CDL A or CDL B License
Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED preferred
Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools
Ability to use a smartphone and mobile applications
Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds repeatedly
Ability to work safely in high-traffic environments
Adaptability to changing schedules and project needs
Ability to pass pre-employment background screening, MVR review, and controlled substance testing
Schedule
Full-Time
Typical Schedule:
Day Shift: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. Monday through Friday
Night Shift: 8:00PM - 4:30 AM. Sunday-Thursday
Additional Requirements:
Participation in on-call rotation
Occasional night and weekend work
Required availability during snow, ice, severe weather, and emergency response events
Pay
Starting pay is based on experience, licenses, certifications, and relevant highway maintenance skills.
Entry-level Highway Maintenance Technician: Starting at $18.50/hour
Night Shift: $19+/hour
Additional consideration for CDL holders and specialized roadway maintenance experience
