Description of Job

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking for a Highway Maintenance Foreperson (LTC Operations I) position that is located in Greeley and helps to cover the Greeley. As the LTC Operations I, you will develop, implement, monitor, and supervise maintenance operations in your area and budgets relating to these activities. This position must maintain operational readiness for weather events and other emergencies and may be placed on call.

Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide safe travel for the traveling public using preservation techniques to extend the life of CDOTs assets through asset management and understanding asset conditions;

  • Responsible for the planning, developing, scheduling, initiating, administering, and managing the maintenance and operations for roadway surfacing, roadside structures, roadside appearance, traffic services, structure maintenance, snow and ice control, material, equipment, buildings, and tunnel activities;

  • Determine the overall work plan and expectations for assigned area; maintain a broader perspective of maintenance activities, including safety, environmental awareness, resources, timing, budget, etc.;

Work Environment:

  • Frequently responds to emergencies outside regular work hours including weekends and holidays

  • Travel required during work hours throughout the Region and Metro Denver, including some overnight travel

  • Approximately 30% of time is spent in the office, while 70% of time is spent in the field

  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

  • Required to work in close proximity to heavy traffic

  • Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time

  • The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather

  • During the extended summer months (approximately May - September), highway maintenance employees typically work 10 hours a day Monday - Thursday, with a three-day weekend

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Experience Only

  • At least four years of road/highway maintenance experience, two years of which included supervisory responsibilities.

Education and Experience:

  • A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least four years of road/highway maintenance experience, two years of which included supervisory responsibilities.
  • Coursework from the Associate in Applied Science in Highway Maintenance Management degree from Front Range Community College may substitute for up to two years of experience at the level of a unit supervisor or equivalent.

Examples of road/highway maintenance experience: repairing potholes; performing asphalt or concrete paving operations; operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, front end loaders and other heavy equipment to repair and/or maintain roads; maintaining right-of-way fences; performing street striping and marking; performing mechanical mowing along the roadside (e.g. handheld weed eater up to a 15 rotary mower); performing bridge; roadside ditch and culvert cleaning and maintenance; installing and/or maintaining roadway signs or guardrail; operating mechanical sweepers; conducting traffic control; or performing mechanical snow removal (gator up to a tandem truck).

Examples of supervisory responsibilities: responsible for supervising at least three full-time employees in all of the following areas: conducting performance goals and reviews, approving leave and timesheets, providing input for personnel actions (e.g. hiring, promoting, separating), applying standard operating procedures, assigning tasks, prioritizing work, identifying and gathering resources to complete tasks, checking work product, dealing with emergencies, conducting safety checks.

Conditions of Employment: The following conditions must be met and maintained in order to be employed and to continue employment at CDOT in this position, unless exempted by the Maintenance Superintendent or Traffic Program Engineer.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Drivers License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.

  • You may be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year as a condition of appointment.

  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider. May be required to work overtime including weekends and holidays.

  • Essential Services Designation - Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services outside regular work hours to ensure health, safety, and welfare.

  • May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes driving time in normal weather conditions to be able to respond in a timely manner after notified to report to work. Knowledge of an emergency or hazardous condition may be considered to be notification to report to work station.

  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.

  • New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Golden, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Golden.
