General Job Information

Job Summary

This position is located in the Department of Public Works, Fleet Management Administration. The Department of Public Works (DPW) provides municipal services in two distinct program areas: environmental services/solid waste management and parking enforcement. Both contribute to making District streets and public spaces clean, safe, attractive and accessible. Behind the scenes, DPW''s Fleet Management Administration supports municipal operations by procuring, fueling and maintaining thousands of District government vehicles, from sedans to heavy equipment. Fleet Management also is responsible for purchasing environmentally friendly, alternative fuel vehicles (AFV) for the city.

Duties and Responsibilities

Incumbent is responsible for leading the operation in performing major repair; overhaul and maintenance on a variety of engineering and/or heavy equipment and automotive and/or light equipment powered by gasoline or diesel engines. Equipment consists of automobiles, trucks, compressors, cranes, loaders, backhoe, trenchers, sanivacs, packers, bulldozers, bucket loaders, tractors and sweepers.

Diagnoses trouble and determines exact nature and extent of repairs required. Repairs diesel engines, fuel injection pumps, governor assemblies, torque converters, transmissions, suspensions, steering and braking systems and related electrical, fuel hydraulic, wheel and engine assemblies. Installs major and minor components. Removes, replaces, adjusts, reassembles, disconnects and/or repairs various appurtenances, parts attachments including brooms, spinners chains, sprinkler systems, pump units and conveyors. Uses a variety of diagnostic and testing equipment including voltmeters, armature growlers, compression gauge testers, ohmmeters, motor analyzers, dynamometers and special tools.

Licenses and Certifications

Incumbent must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator''s Permit, a D.C. Government Operator''s Permit, and a Commercial Driver''s License (CDL).

Incumbent must have at least two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications, or WreckMaster Certification.

Work Environment

Works indoor on wet, greasy floors in uncomfortable positions while manipulating tools to get parts that are often hard to reach. Work is also performed outside in field as the situation dictates thus exposure to various conditions, i.e., rain, cold, snow and danger of falling, carbon monoxide fumes, and electrical shocks.

Position Designation: The position has been deemed safety-sensitive, pursuant to section 410 of Chapter 4 of the D.C. Personnel Regulations. Accordingly, the incumbent will be subject to criminal background check; traffic record check (as applicable); pre-employment drug and alcohol test; reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test; post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test; random drug and alcohol test; and return-to-duty or follow-up drug and alcohol test.

Essential Designation: This position is classified as an essential position under the provisions of the District Personnel Manual Chapter 12. As such, the incumbent is required to serve in emergency situations to perform critical duties, i.e., snow removal, debris removal, transportation, shelter, operations, food distribution, and communications. These duties may be performed when the government is closed or when employees are dismissed early.

Applicants claiming "Residency Preference" will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of employment.
