POSITION SUMMARY
Performs skilled work in the operation of light, medium, and heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment for city street construction and maintenance activities; performs other job-related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operate light, medium, and heavy-duty maintenance and construction equipment such as dump trucks, water trucks, rollers, sweepers, front-end loaders, backhoes, paint stripers, skid steer, road grader, and other equipment as required in the maintenance and repair of city streets and roadways.
- Perform a variety of heavy manual work in connection with the construction, maintenance, and repair of structures, devices, and systems in the right of way to include sidewalks, curbs, streets, storm drains, and concrete structures.
- Conduct Winter Maintenance Operations to include applying sand, salt, and brine to road surfaces and snow removal.
- Respond to citizens questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
- Provides for the maintenance and repairs of city streets and roadways including preparing road surfaces for patching, painting, chip sealing, and other repairs as needed. Install and maintain roadway and right-of-way markings, delineators, and paint schemes.
- Responds to work orders and emergencies on the roadway right of way or to ancillary structures that require repair, debris removal, or cleanup, and manages vegetation in the right of way.
- Responds to emergency calls including reading maps, locating storm drains, and diagnosing storm drain problems.
- Operates a variety of hand, portable, powered, and unpowered tools such as air tools, grease guns, drills, wrenches, and equipment related to work assignments as instructed.
- Observes safe work methods and uses safety equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets and roadsides, including placing barriers, cones, and warning signs to secure work sites from traffic hazards as necessary.
- Provides routine maintenance of city vehicles and related tools and equipment, including washing trucks and checking oil, fuel, and fluid levels as needed.
- Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
- Is punctual and timely in meeting requirements of performance, including attendance standards and work deadlines.
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.
- Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) Required.
- 4 plus years in Heavy Equipment Operation and Roadside Maintenance and/or any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
- Valid State of Idaho Class A Commercial Drivers License or obtain within 12 months.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Strong oral and written communication skills, communicating effectively by phone, in person, and in writing.
- Ability to deal with a wide range of persons and communicate effectively both orally and in writing using both technical and non-technical language.
- Safe, proper, and efficient operation and care of construction and maintenance equipment.
- Research, data compilation, and report generation.
- Public works construction and maintenance activities.
- Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules applicable to motor vehicle and equipment operations, to include traffic hazards and traffic safety procedures.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
- Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Basic knowledge of current practices, procedures, and functional services involved within the public sector of a municipal government is preferably desired.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment and the employee in this class is subject to outside environmental conditions.
