The City of Greensboro Water Resources Department is seeking a skilled, dependable, and safety-focused professional to join our team as a Heavy Equipment Operator (Hydro Operator). In this hands-on role, you will operate specialized equipment to support preventative maintenance and emergency excavation activities involving the City’s sanitary sewer and water distribution systems.

Compensation and Benefits:

Estimated Hiring Salary Range: $50,376.00 - $57,573.00   Full Salary Range: $43,755.00 - $78,299.00 Annually

The Water Resources Department provides essential water and wastewater services that protect public health, support our community, and keep Greensboro moving forward. Our Operations teams maintain and repair the infrastructure responsible for delivering safe water and managing wastewater throughout the City.

About the Role:

As a Heavy Equipment Operator (Hydro Operator), you will perform preventative and emergency excavation activities involving the City’s sanitary sewer and water distribution systems. You will operate and maintain assigned equipment, complete required maintenance documentation, and provide direction and input regarding the work performed by the Hydro Helper assigned to the truck.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Performing preventative and emergency excavation activities on sanitary sewer and water distribution lines.
  • Operating and maintaining assigned hydro excavation equipment.
  • Completing work logs, maintenance records, and other required documentation accurately and on time.
  • Providing direction, guidance, and input regarding the daily activities of the Hydro Helper.
  • Following established safety procedures for excavation, trenching, shoring, traffic control, and work zones.
  • Applying demonstrated knowledge of OSHA trenching and shoring requirements and the utility locate color-code system.
  • Performing physically demanding work, including heavy lifting, climbing, bending, and stooping.
  • Participating in an on-call rotation and responding to after-hours emergencies.
  • Working outdoors in all types of weather, including adverse and inclement conditions.

**The successful candidate must hold and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement.**

This role is ideal for someone dependable, safety-conscious, comfortable operating heavy equipment, and prepared to take responsibility when critical maintenance or emergencies arise.

This position is NON-EXEMPT under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
