JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, operates heavy equipment such as cranes, clamshells, power shovels, motor graders, heavy loaders, carryalls, bulldozers, rollers, scrapers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments to maintain and repair roads, parking facilities, airfields, and firebreaks. This position requires knowledge of preventative and corrective maintenance programs for roads, parking facilities, and airfields.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The list of essential functions below is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this job. Other duties may be assigned based on business need.

  • Operates heavy equipment used in excavation, backfilling, and loading operations to excavate, load, or move dirt, gravel, or other materials. Equipment may include backhoes, large and small tractors, loaders, trenchers, grader blades, snow blades, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, pickup trucks, hand tools, and portable electric tools.
  • Monitors and reviews equipment, structures, materials, events, and the work environment to detect and assess problems; identifies causes and evaluates results to determine the best solution.
  • Reads and interprets grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
  • Manages material resources and time; orders needed materials, accounts for materials, and completes work within allotted time limits and acceptable quality standards.
  • Adheres to procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
  • Drives vehicles equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
  • May grease, adjust, and make emergency repairs to equipment.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of work experience in roads and grounds maintenance or demonstrated ability to properly use heavy equipment.
  • CDL or other special classification of operators license may be required.
  • Mathematics to calculate material usage, complete logs, time sheets, notate mileage, and to
  • accurately use measuring tools, equipment and devices.
  • Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs and techniques.
  • Ability to follow directions, instructions, structured process and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to provide information, signal others as needed, complete daily records, and to act responsively to inquiries and requests from vendors, customers, management, and to escalate the matters appropriately.
  • Ability to manage and accurately track material resources and time, and adapt to changing work priorities.
  • Ability to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work priorities, and to build effective working relationships with staff, customers and others.
  • Demonstrated organizational, problem-solving and common sense skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Driver's License
  • ClassA License Hazmat End

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed above, an individual must be able to perform each of the established essential functions in order to perform this job successfully.

TRAVEL:

No travel is expected for this position.

  • Must be authorized to access and work on government installations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees must be able to perform the essential physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, for extended periods of time. Duties may include:

  • Maneuvering over uneven ground.
  • Maneuvering in, around, and on equipment.
  • Climbing and working from high platforms.
  • Reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate levers and steering wheels.
  • Bending, stooping, and reaching.
  • Lifting or moving tools, equipment, and/or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

These physical requirements may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Work is performed at a customer's location on job sites in a construction environment using various tools and mechanical, electrical, and construction equipment.

Employees may be required to travel between work locations within the site and, at times, work in confined spaces.

Employees may be exposed to hazardous equipment, toxic substances, equipment noise, and varying external weather conditions including wind, rain, cold, and heat.

Employees are required to wear and properly use all designated personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with applicable safety policies, regulations, and company procedures.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Tasks require visual acuity, depth perception, hearing, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate effectively while operating equipment and working around moving vehicles and machinery.

Availability: Full Time

Salary: $32.02 per hour
