OVERVIEW & PURPOSE:

Performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy equipment in the Solid Waste Department. This position is responsible for assignments ranging from minor adjustments to component rebuilds, including gasoline, diesel, and hydraulic equipment. This position must exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assigned tasks. Reports to the Equipment Services Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.

Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on power drive, brakes, steering mechanisms, and electrical, cooling and related systems on light and heavy motorized equipment and vehicles.

Performs preventive maintenance on departmental vehicles and heavy equipment; maintains files of equipment repairs performed. Records maintenance activities in electronic format.

Utilizes electronic analyzer and data base to troubleshoot equipment and perform needed repairs.

Repairs and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum operated systems; replaces hydraulic motors, hoses and fittings; installs and adjusts power takeoffs.

Performs welding, fabrication and machine work incidental to completion of repair assignments.

Performs service calls for landfill equipment and on road equipment.

Adjusts and makes repairs to diesel engines; adjusts or repairs valves, carburetors, generators and related units; replaces all worn or defective parts.

Performs daily housekeeping duties to ensure clean and organized shop.

Performs other related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, parts and equipment used in the repair of light automotive passenger cars & trucks, on road diesel transfer trucks & trailers, heavy construction and maintenance equipment.

Considerable knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and repair.

Considerable knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, air conditioning, vacuum, and brake systems.

Considerable knowledge of safety hazards and precautions related to equipment repair environments.

Considerable knowledge of the application of information technology to the work.

Skill in the use and the operations of tools and machinery used in automotive and equipment repair work.

Skill in welding and metal fabrication.

Ability to detect any worn or broken parts by inspection.

Ability to understand service manuals and schematic drawings.

Ability to operate vehicles safely.

Ability to follow instructions accurately.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers.

Ability to prepare and maintain electronic records of work activities.

Ability to maintain proper and secure inventory of parts and supplies.

Ability to maintain tools and equipment provided to complete daily equipment maintenance task.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE "REQUIREMENTS":

Graduation from High school supplemented by formal training in mechanical or related trades, and three to five (3-5) years of experience as an automotive mechanic including experience in the maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered engines preferred; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the

Required skills, knowledge and abilities. Familiarity with and ability to use computer specifically when troubleshooting and recording activities in maintenance program.

ADDITIONAL "REQUIREMENTS":

Possession of appropriate valid North Carolina Commercial Driver's License with Class A endorsement.

This position is designated as an authorized Motor Vehicle Operator for Iredell County and requires adherence to the Iredell County Vehicle Operations Policy.
