This position offers a hiring bonus of $3,000 for candidates who possess a Class A or Class B CDL.

Paid in two equal installments: $1,500.00 after 90 days of employment & $1,500.00 after completion of probation.

The Facilities and Fleet Department of Prince William County Government is accepting applications for qualified Heavy Equipment Mechanics. We are seeking reliable, motivated individuals to help ensure that our equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational through preventive maintenance and timely repairs.

About This Role:

Qualified applicants should have hands-on experience repairing and maintaining heavy vehicles and equipment. The ideal candidate will be able to independently diagnose and repair County vehicles, hydraulic drive units, grounds maintenance equipment, and small equipment using electronic scan tools and various types of machinery.

Duties include:

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy equipment, vehicles, and associated components.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance services on diesel-powered and gasoline-powered equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and fuel system issues.
  • Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems to include metal fabrication.
  • Conduct safety inspections and ensure equipment complies with applicable regulations and operational standards.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Operate mechanical & computerized diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform emergency repairs as needed.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean and organized work area.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience repairing or performing preventive maintenance on heavy equipment, construction equipment, fleet vehicles, or closely related equipment
  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire, is required
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and/or relevant manufacturer certifications or be able to obtain
  • Must supply your own mechanic hand tools. A tool allowance of $375 is provided twice a year.

Preferred Credentials:

  • ASE, manufacturer, or other industry-recognized certifications

Preferred Experience:

  • Diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, and servicing air compressors, pump apparatus, and truck hydraulic systems
  • Performing skilled mechanical repairs, overhauls, and maintenance on specialized equipment
  • Overhauling, fabricating, and servicing assemblies such as single- and two-speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, and hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum, and electrical systems
  • Performing preventive maintenance and diagnosing mechanical issues in vehicles and equipment
  • Using shop machinery, precision instruments, and specialty tools (e.g., dynamometers, boring bars, valve refacing equipment, micrometers, alignment gauges, power saws, grinders, drill presses, lathes)
  • Diagnosing and repairing computer-aided systems (fuel injection, anti-skid brakes, emissions, engine sensors) using computerized diagnostic tools
  • Conducting state safety and emissions inspections
  • Purchasing parts and materials through computerized systems

Special Requirements:

  • Virginia State Inspector license or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire (County will pay fees to obtain)
  • Class A or B CDL, or ability to obtain within 12 months
  • Able to regularly lift a minimum of 50 to 80 pounds as needed

Pre-employment Checks:

Due to access to sensitive vehicles and equipment, the following pre-employment checks are required: successful completion of a police background check, finger printing and credit check; physical exam (including drug testing), and possession of a clean driving record.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a shop and field environment and may involve exposure to moving mechanical parts, noise, grease, dust, fumes, and varying weather conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be worn as required.

Work Schedule:

This position is considered full-time working Monday - Friday, 37.5 hours a week. The position is essential and must report to work during emergencies. In addition, this position supports the Public Works' Solid Waste Division and may be required to work on holidays.
