Position Summary
Columbus Quarry LLC is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Heavy Equipment Diesel & Welding Technician to join our premier granite surface mining operation. In this role, you will leverage your dual expertise in mechanical diagnostics and fabrication to optimize our production equipment readiness. You will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and executing precision maintenance on heavy-duty diesel engines and mobile quarry assets (including loaders, excavators, haul trucks, etc.). As a member of our maintenance team, you will drive preventive maintenance strategies, systematically manage Ground Engaging Tools (G.E.T.), and perform welding to maximize machinery longevity, minimize downtime, and support continuous production.
- Preventive Maintenance & G.E.T. Management: Proactively monitor, evaluate, remove, and replace Ground Engaging Tools (G.E.T.), including bucket teeth, adapters, cutting edges, and wear shrouds, ensuring integrity and preventing critical damage to base assemblies.
- Welding & Fabrication: Execute high-strength welding, hardfacing, and crack repairs on loader/excavator buckets, truck beds, and specialized heavy equipment attachments utilizing stick or wire-feed welding processes.
- Mobile Equipment Fleet Maintenance: Efficiently service, overhaul, adjust, and test heavy earthmoving machinery and ancillary support equipment to preserve peak plant efficiency and fleet reliability.
- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Conduct thorough visual, physical, and mechanical inspections to rapidly identify and remediate mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical faults.
- Shop & Pit Safety Leadership: Champion a zero-harm culture by safely handling industrial tools, rigging equipment, torches, and welding units, while actively identifying hazards across the maintenance shop and open pit areas.
- Accurate Technical Recordkeeping: Diligently document daily work orders, parts utilization, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance metrics within our electronic tracking systems to maintain full data integrity.

- Welding & Metallurgy Expertise: Demonstrated proficiency in industrial welding, torch cutting, and hardfacing methodologies specifically tailored to protect heavy machinery components against extreme abrasive wear.
- Strict Safety Adherence: Unwavering commitment to operational safety, including a proactive mindset toward hazard mitigation and strict compliance with Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Solid mechanical understanding of heavy-duty diesel engines, powertrains, and high-pressure hydraulic systems.
- Operational Efficiency: Exceptional ability to deliver precise, high-quality work under strict operational timelines, keeping critical quarry logistics running smoothly.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- High School Diploma, GED, or an equivalent technical trade certificate in Diesel Technology or Welding/Fabrication. Proven background in industrial welding and heavy equipment fabrication.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel trucks or heavy mining/construction equipment (preferred).
- Valid standard driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
- Proficiency with stick welding, dual-shield wire welding, oxy-fuel cutting torches, and carbon arc gouging. Robust knowledge of G.E.T. configurations across major heavy machinery OEMs (CAT, Komatsu, etc.).
- Technical literacy; ability to seamlessly read, interpret, and implement instructions from technical service manuals and weld symbols.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Work Environment: Fully comfortable working in an outdoor industrial environment year-round, navigating variable Southern weather conditions.
- Physical Strength: Ability to perform demanding physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs consistently, climbing ladders, and safely navigating rugged, uneven quarry terrain.
- Schedule & Shift Hours: Standard production shift is 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Candidates must possess the scheduling flexibility to work some Saturdays as production demands dictate.
