Under supervision, performs journey level mechanical work repairing and maintaining medium and heavy trucks and construction equipment; and performs related work as required.

This is an Open Competitive/Countywide Promotional recruitment being conducted to fill a current full-time vacancy in Community Services Department. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies as they occur.

Minimum Qualifications

Four years of full-time paid experience as a journey level mechanic specializing in heavy equipment, diesel engines and hydraulic systems; OR completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for repair of heavy equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

License Or Certificate

A valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License must be obtained within six months of hire and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

Basic mechanics tools, including a toolbox, customarily used to perform the duties of this position are required at the time of appointment.

A Hazmat Endorsement is required to run a lube truck and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.

The ideal candidate should possess

  • Experience repairing and maintaining heavy trucks, construction equipment, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems.
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, particularly with complex hydraulic, diesel engine, transmission, electrical, air brake, steering, suspension, and cooling systems.
  • A safety-focused and dependable approach, with the ability to perform physically demanding work safely, follow written and verbal instructions, and work effectively around heavy equipment, oils, chemicals, dust, and other industrial hazards.
  • The ability to operate heavy equipment and vehicles, with the capability and willingness to obtain a Class A CDL within six months of hire.
  • A collaborative and self-directed work style, with the ability to work with minimal supervision, maintain accurate maintenance and parts records, use computer systems and work orders, and provide guidance or training to other mechanics as needed.
  • The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment while providing excellent customer service.

Conditions of Employment

The Washoe County Employees Association (WCEA) Non-Supervisory Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) covers the Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic position.

Background checks will be conducted on selected applicants through the State of Nevada and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Per the Washoe County Background and Reference Checks Policy, new and rehired employees are required to submit to a fingerprint-based background investigation. Effective October 1, 2026, the $40.00 fee associated with this background investigation will be paid by the employee (if applicable) and deducted automatically from the first paycheck. Employment is contingent upon the results of the background check, although a record of conviction will not necessarily bar an applicant from employment.

Washoe County requires its employees to reside in the state of Nevada or neighboring California communities such as Truckee, South Lake Tahoe or Susanville as of their first day of work.

Washoe County hires all new employees at the minimum rate of the salary range and eligible employees may receive an annual merit increase of 5% until they reach the maximum salary for the classification. Upon promotion, current Washoe County employees are placed at the minimum rate of the salary range for the higher classification of the new position OR a promotional calculation, whichever is greater.

Pursuant to the Washoe County Personnel Handbook 5.160 - waiver of examination. The director of human resources may waive examination for those classes requiring specific training, education, certification, licensure, experience or when there are an insufficient number of qualified candidates.
