Heat Treat Furnace Operator & Batch Line Lead

Picture the start of your shift: you scan the batch schedule, check fixtures and alloys, and line up parts for precise thermal processing. You bring the heat to exacting standards—operating batch and temper furnaces, fine‑tuning controls, and keeping quality records tight. Along the way, you mentor Batch Rackers, jump in to rack or unrack when needed, and keep the department organized and safe.

What you’ll do

• Operate batch and temper furnaces to meet process specifications.
• Make control adjustments to achieve proper thermal profiles.
• Verify the accuracy of racking using the correct fixtures, alloy, and racking methods.
• Perform routine maintenance on the carbon analyzer as required.
• Burn shims and complete all related documentation accurately.
• Verify that unracking meets all specified requirements.
• Assist with racking and unracking tasks as production demands.
• Confirm completion and accuracy of departmental paperwork and tags.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderly organization throughout the department.

Leadership

Provide direction to Batch Rackers and oversee all employees in the department during the absence of the shift supervisor.

Training and qualification path

• Perform each essential duty satisfactorily; additional training needs may be identified during employee appraisals.
• Furnace operating trainee will work under the supervision of an approved furnace operator and must receive recommendations from both the training operator and supervisor.
• Must pass a hands‑on test and a written Level 1 Heat Treat Test or Quality/Heat Treat Operations Test with a score of 85%.

Education & experience

• High school diploma or GED preferred, not required.
• One to three months of related experience and/or training preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Core skills

• Language: Read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Math: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers and decimals.
• Reasoning: Apply common‑sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.

Physical demands

Regular standing is required; occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work environment

Frequent exposure to extreme heat; noise level is moderately loud.
