The VA Long Beach Healthcare System is seeking qualified Health Technicians to provide direct patient care and clinical support services within inpatient units including ICU, Direct Observation Unit (DOU), and Medical-Surgical Telemetry. The Health Technician functions as a multi-skilled healthcare professional responsible for phlebotomy, EKG procedures, patient care support, patient transport, documentation, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and specimen collection for inpatient laboratory testing.
  • Process, label, and transport specimens according to established protocols.
  • Perform ECG/EKG testing including proper lead placement and equipment operation.
  • Recognize and promptly report abnormal cardiac rhythms or urgent findings to the healthcare provider.
  • Assist patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), including bathing, dressing, repositioning, hygiene care, and mobility assistance.
  • Provide 1:1 patient observation and safety monitoring when required.
  • Transport patients safely throughout the facility using electric gurneys and other transport equipment.
  • Document patient care, assessments, and clinical activities in electronic medical records.
  • Support nursing staff and healthcare providers in delivering high-quality patient care.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care and positive patient outcomes.
  • Adhere to Joint Commission, HIPAA, Infection Control, and VA healthcare standards.
  • Attend all required VA orientation sessions and annual mandatory training programs.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Certifications

  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • Current California Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) Certification through the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).
  • Current EKG/ECG Certification.

Experience

  • Minimum one (1) year of Health Technician, Patient Care Technician, Phlebotomist, or related healthcare experience.

Required Skills

  • Phlebotomy and specimen collection proficiency.
  • ECG/EKG performance and cardiac rhythm recognition.
  • Patient care and Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assistance.
  • Patient transport and mobility support.
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) documentation.
  • Basic computer and typing skills.
  • Strong communication, organization, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced acute care environment.

Preferred Experience

  • ICU, Telemetry, Direct Observation Unit (DOU), or Acute Care Hospital experience.
  • Experience with inpatient phlebotomy services.
  • Experience working with electronic medical record systems.
  • Previous VA or government healthcare experience preferred.
